Aaron Rodgers to Dolphins odds: Miami long-shot option despite prediction by former teammate Kurt Benkert

Could Aaron Rodgers end up in Miami?

By@jordanpaytonsn1Updated: Mar 02, 2023 8:35PM UTC . 3 min read

Not all that long ago, the Miami Dolphins went big game hunting and tried to land Tom Brady. They didn't, and their tampering led to severe punishments for the franchise – including a loss of its 2023 first-round pick, which would have been No. 21 overall – and owner Stephen Ross. Could the Dolphins go chasing another Hall of Fame quarterback in Aaron Rodgers? One of his former teammates thinks so, but SportsLine oddsmakers don't give a great chance of happening.

Rodgers has been out of his darkness retreat in Oregon for more than a week, so a decision could come any day now on whether he retires (likely not happening), stays in Green Bay for the 2023 season, or officially asks for a trade. The Packers reportedly will only send him to an AFC team.

In a vacuum, Miami would be a perfect landing spot for Rodgers -- not just for the lack of a state income tax and the social life of South Beach. The Dolphins have the best receiving duo in the NFL in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The team has said it's sticking with Tua Tagovailoa, but he has a scary history of concussions and GM Chris Grier has not committed to Tagovailoa's fifth-year rookie option, which would guarantee the quarterback's 2024 salary. Miami has until May 1 to make that choice.

"I think all options [are on the table]," Grier said recently. When asked about Tua's health impacting a potential extension, he added: "I can't lie and say no. But it's not something that is going to make us afraid to do something long term with him."

Even if the Dolphins don't exercise that option, they could always use the franchise tag on Tagovailoa after the 2023 season if need be, just like the Giants might have to  soon with Daniel Jones after they declined his option last summer. Tagovailoa has potential, but he's not Rodgers.

Which brings us to Rodgers' former teammate Kurt Benkert, who said this to The Spun: "Aaron Rodgers is going to end up either a New York Jet or a Miami Dolphin. If I had to REALLY guess, I'd say the Miami Dolphins (because they) have the roster to win a Super Bowl and he could really enjoy some time in the warmth (and) defrost a little bit after all of these years."

Benkert's analysis isn't necessarily wrong, but it's hard to say how well he knows Rodgers having spent only the 2021 season in Green Bay, and mostly on the practice squad. The Raiders and Jets have been most linked to Rodgers, with New York perhaps ready to sign Derek Carr as a fallback. Both those teams have 2023 first-round picks to offer the Packers via trade.

Of all the teams listed below, the Jets currently have the shortest Caesars Sportsbook odds to win Super Bowl 58 at +3000 (better than the Packers). Only the Raiders face Green Bay in 2023.

Via SportsLine oddsmakers: Which team will Aaron Rodgers play for Week 1 in 2023?

  • Packers Even
  • Raiders +300
  • Jets +400
  • Titans +900
  • Dolphins +1500
  • Retired +2000
