2023 NCAA Tournament South Region bracket picks: Upset watch, Alabama's toughest test and more to know

Find out the ins and outs of the NCAA Tournament's East Region from expert Mike Tierney, who is 7-1 (+590) in his last 8 college basketball picks

The Alabama Crimson Tide enter the men's 2023 NCAA Tournament as the top overall seed and the No. 1 seed in the South Region of the bracket. The Tide have had an excellent season on the court, most recently defeating Texas A&M to win the SEC Tournament. Alabama is the second favorite (behind Houston) to win the Big Dance, and is primed to make a deep run.

Off the court, things are different. Star guard Brandon Miller brought the weapon that was allegedly used in the fatal shooting of a woman in Tuscaloosa by a teammate, according to police testimony. Miller remains in uniform, and the incident has cast a shadow over the Tide's campaign. Alabama remains a title contender, and for good reason, but will be under heavy scrutiny as the event progresses.

The Tide will have to work hard to get to the Final Four. No. 2 Arizona and No. 3 Baylor are heavyweights in the South. No. 6 Creighton was a preseason favorite and is blistering hot. Also surging is No. 13 Furman, which tore through the Southern Conference like a hot knife through butter.

The Crimson Tide have all the pedigree one expects of a favorite, and Miller is as potent as any player in the tournament. Can Alabama get out of the South and head to Houston for the Final Four? Or is an upset in the team's future?

Before you lock in your bracket, here's everything you should consider about the South Region.
