2022 US Open golf odds: Tiger Woods will not compete in next week's major championship outside Boston

Tiger Woods has decided he's not healthy enough to compete in the 2022 U.S. Open.

It has been quite the newsworthy day in golf. First, Dustin Johnson and a few others who have joined the new Saudi-backed LIV Golf series decided to resign from the PGA Tour rather than face sanctions from that tour. Now comes another body blow for the PGA Tour: Tiger Woods will not play in next week's U.S. Open outside Boston. Johnson, Phil Mickelson and a handful of other LIV Golf players will be there unless they are (surprisingly) banned.

Tiger had been a +5000 longer shot at Caesars Sportsbook to win the U.S. Open for a record-tying fourth time and first since his epic 19-hole Monday playoff win over Rocco Mediate in 2008 at Torrey Pines. As a reminder, there is no longer an 18-hole playoff at the U.S. Open but a two-hole aggregate playoff.

Woods, who reportedly turned down nearly $1 billion to join the LIV Golf Series, withdrew following a third-round 79 at the PGA Championship last month and likely will only play major championships going forward – and he does plan to play in next month's British Open at St. Andrews. Woods was struggling at times at the PGA Championship with his injured leg and was showing a pronounced limp at Southern Hills in Tulsa.

Tiger tweeted this today: "I previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing in the @usopengolf as my body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf. I do hope and plan to be ready to play in Ireland at @JPProAm and at @TheOpen next month. I'm excited to get back out there soon!"

Woods missed last year's U.S. Open due to the car crash that injured his leg and missed the cut at the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot. The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., is hosting the U.S. Open for the first time since 1988 when American Curtis Strange won.

Woods' absence and the return of Mickelson to the PGA Tour will be the two biggest storylines next week. Mickelson skipped the first two majors this year, but the U.S. Open is all that's missing from his career Grand Slam.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and world No. 2 Jon Rahm, the defending champion, are currently +1200 favorites for the U.S. Open. Scheffler is playing this week's Canadian Open and is a +800 favorite, but Rahm will sit out.
