2022 Stanley Cup odds: Flames legitimate Cup threats after trading for Tyler Toffoli from Canadiens

There was a big trade in the NHL on Monday.

I'm not here saying that the Calgary Flames will win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1989, but if you plan on backing them to do so it might be wise to make that bet now before the odds shorten as the Flames landed a very good forward in Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens on Monday. Calgary is currently +2200 to win the Stanley Cup at Caesars Sportsbook. No team from Canada has won it all since Montreal in 1993.

Toffoli is signed through the 2023-24 season at a cap hit of $4.25 million. He has nine goals and 26 points in 37 games this season. Last year, the winger had five goals and 14 points in 22 playoff games as the Canadiens reached the Stanley Cup Final.

Calgary is rolling as it is on a six-game winning streak and is just a point behind Vegas for the Pacific Division lead. The Flames have by far the best goal differential in the division at plus-44. Toffoli should debut Tuesday vs. Columbus. Current Calgary head coach Darryl Sutter coached Toffoli to a Stanley Cup championship in 2014 when both were with the Los Angeles Kings.

You should have been fading the Canadiens as it is as they are absolutely terrible, although in fairness they have been destroyed by injury and illness this season (No. 1 goaltender Carey Price hasn't played a game), but definitely start fading them now if not as the fire sale has begun.

The Canadiens are getting Tyler Pitlick (two points in 25 games), prospect Emil Heineman, a Top 10 protected 2022 first-round pick and a 2024 fifth-round pick. Montreal recently fired Coach Dominique Ducharme and replaced him with Martin St. Louis, but it hasn't mattered as the Habs are 0-3 under the former Hall of Fame player and on a 10-game skid overall.

The NHL Trade Deadline is March 21.
