2022 PGA Championship tee times, odds, betting trends: Tiger Woods starts Thursday morning 9:11 Eastern with Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth
Tiger Woods will get an early start to the 2022 PGA Championship on Thursday.
The last time the extremely tough Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., hosted a PGA Championship it was 2007, and Tiger Woods won it for a fourth and final time. Jack Nicklaus holds the record in the stroke-play era with by taking home the Wanamaker Trophy five times, and Woods is a +6000 longer shot to tie the Golden Bear this week at the 2022 PGA Championship – and not taking all that much action at Caesars Sportsbook. Woods will start the tournament at 9:11 a.m. ET Thursday (8:11 a.m. local time) in a star-studded trio with Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.
Tiger hasn't played since the Masters, which was his first official event back since a serious car accident that nearly cost him a leg. Woods had an impressive first-round 71 at Augusta but then faded on the weekend with back-to-back 78s and finished 47th. He admitted he was in pain after his rounds on the weekend. Woods says he is feeling "stronger" than he did at the Masters.
"I've gotten a lot stronger since the Masters," Woods said to Golfweek at Southern Hills. "We went back to work on Tuesday (after the Masters). Monday was awful; I did nothing and Tuesday was leg day. So we went right back after it. Everything is better."
Tiger's win here in 2007 was his 13th of 15 majors and his first as a father. Woods opened +4000 at Caesars to win this week but is up to +6000 with a lack of action – which is unusual because bettors can't often help themselves when it comes to betting Woods futures. He's ninth in total tickets sold at four percent and 13th in money wagered at three percent. By comparison, Masters champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (+1100) is taking the most money at 16 percent and the most tickets at 14 percent.
"For Tiger to return to the Masters, it was just storybook," said Anthony Salleroli, Lead Golf Trader at Caesars Sportsbook. "People just loved the story, so that was the driving force behind all those tickets on him then. Now you have the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, it was pretty interesting when he went and played a practice tournament there about a month ago. I listened to the director, who actually played with him, speak about it and he said Tiger was in great form. But it just doesn't have the Masters buzz, so the fact that he's not generating nearly as many tickets here is not a surprise."
Tiger is -140 to make the cut and +100 to miss. McIlroy is +1400 to win his third career PGA Championship, and Spieth is +1600 to win his first and compete the career Grand Slam (he would become third-youngest to do so at age 28). While McIlroy isn't taking heavy action at Caesars, Spieth is second in money wagered at nine percent and second in tickets sold at seven percent. That trio will tee off Round 2 at 2:36 p.m. ET on Friday. They have combined for 22 major titles.Â
Scheffler has been grouped with 2020 PGA Championship winner and world No. 3 Collin Morikawa (+1800) and reigning U.S. Open champion and world No. 2 Jon Rahm (+1200), the only player who can pass Scheffler at the top of the world rankings this week. They go off at 2:36 p.m. ET Thursday.
