2022 French Open tennis odds: Carlos Alcaraz survives match point, next faces American Sebastian Korda in third round

Carlos Alcaraz was nearly upset in the second round of the French Open on Wednesday and next faces a promising American.

Rising Spanish tennis superstar Carlos Alcaraz, who has played better than anyone on the ATP Tour this season, faced a fourth-set match point in Tuesday's second-round match at the 2022 French Open against countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas but was able to win in five sets and will face American Sebastian Korda in the third round in Paris. There aren't any odds up for that match quite yet, but Alcaraz is the +250 second favorite at Caesars Sportsbook to win the clay-court major behind Novak Djokovic.

The 34-year-old lefty Ramos-Vinolas gave Alcaraz fits as he not only faced match point in the 10th game of the fourth set – which Alcaraz won 7-6(2) – but was down 3-0 in the fifth before rallying for a 6-1, 6-7(7), 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-4 victory in four hours and 34 minutes. The 19-year-old Alcaraz converted just seven of his 31 break points. He also had 74 unforced errors but 74 winners compared to 32 winners for Ramos-Vinolas.

The sixth-seeded Alcaraz is now 30-3 in his matches this season with four titles. He entered the French Open having beaten Rafael Nadal, Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev en route to his second ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid. Those four are all in the same half of the French draw.

The 21-year-old Korda is seeded 27th and has beaten both John Millman and Richard Gasquet in straight sets so far in this tournament. The furthest Korda has advanced in a major is the fourth round at the 2020 French Open and the fourth of 2021 Wimbledon. Korda, +10000 to win the French Open, is the only player to have beaten Alcaraz on clay this year, a 7-6(2), 6-7(5), 6-3 win in Monaco last month. Alcaraz was a -435 favorite and Korda +350 for that match.

The only other meeting between the two was on indoor hard courts last year in Italy at the ATP Finals, with Alcaraz winning in straight sets.

Korda's lone career singles title was in 2021 on clay in Parma. The time for the Korda-Alcaraz match is yet to be determined. The winner would face either 10th-seeded Cameron Norrie or No. 21 Karen Khachanov in the fourth round.
