2021 British Open golf odds: PGA Championship winner Jon Rahm, back to No. 1 in world rankings, favored to win final major of year in July

On Sunday at Torrey Pines in San Diego, Jon Rahm won his first major championship and became the first Spaniard to win the PGA Championship – while also jumping to No. 1 in the world rankings. He shot a final-round 67 to finish at 6-under 278 and edge South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen by a shot. Rahm entered the tournament as the +1000 favorite at William Hill Sportsbook and is now a +900 favorite to win the final major championship of the golf season, next month's British Open – it starts July 15.

Rahm birdied the 17th and 18th holes Sunday at Torrey Pines, becoming just the fourth player this century to birdie the 71st and 72nd holes in winning a major. The others were Phil Mickelson at the 2013 British Open, Charl Schwartzel at the 2011 Masters and Tiger Woods at the 2000 PGA Championship.

It was Rahm's sixth career PGA Tour win – he probably would have gotten No. 6 a few weeks ago at the Memorial but was forced to withdraw with a six-shot lead after three rounds due to a positive COVID test. That WD cost Rahm likely $1.674 million, which was the first-place prize money at the Memorial. He won $2.25 million by claiming the U.S. Open.

Rahm supplanted Dustin Johnson atop the world rankings because of the victory. Johnson had been No. 1 since winning last year's FedExCup playoffs. Rahm previously was No. 1 for a total of four weeks prior to Johnson moving up.

One bettor at William Hill won $28,000 on Sunday as he had wagered $2000 on Rahm weeks ago to win the U.S. Open when he was +1300. On Dec. 11, 2020, a William Hill bettor in West Virginia parlayed the Atlanta Hawks winning the Southeast Division (+800) and Rahm to win the U.S. Open (+1100). That $65 wager paid $7,020.

This year's British Open will be held at Royal St George's Golf Club in Sandwich, England. That course was to host the 2020 Open Championship but it was cancelled due to COVID. It will be the 15th time that Royal St George's hosts the event and first since 2011 when Englishman Darren Clarke was a surprise winner.

Rahm has played in the British Open four times and yet to have a Top-10 finish – he has at least two Top 10s in each of the other three majors. He was T11 in 2019. The defending British Open champion is Irishman Shane Lowry, who won by six shots two years ago at Royal Portrush. Lowry is +4000 to repeat.

This week's PGA Tour stop is the Travelers Championship outside Hartford and Rahm is skipping it. Johnson is playing, the defending champion and betting favorite.
