The 2023 Open Championship is next week at Royal Liverpool, but that hasn't had a negative effect on the field for the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open. The 2023 Scottish Open, co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, tees off Thursday at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. Nine of the top 11 golfers in the the world rankings are scheduled to compete, the exceptions being No. 2 Jon Rahm and LIV golfer Cameron Smith (No. 7).

The 2023 Scottish Open gives the PGA Tour stars a chance to acclimate to links golf in advance of the British Open. No. 1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the field, along with third-ranked Rory McIlroy and defending champion Xander Schauffele. McIlroy won the 2014 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and is gearing up for a shot at his first major title since winning the PGA Championship a month later.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Scheffler as the 7-1 favorite in its latest 2023 Genesis Scottish Open golf odds, with McIlroy (17-2) not far behind. The only other golfers shorter than 20-1 are Patrick Cantlay (14-1), Schauffele (14-1), Rickie Fowler (16-1) and Viktor Hovland (18-1). Schauffele edged Kurt Kitayama last year, finishing at 7 under par to win his seventh tour title. That was the first time the winning score at the Scottish Open was in single digits since 1998. The first three editions at the Renaissance Club went to a playoff. Last year's Scottish Open nearly did the same, but Kitayama missed a 6-footer for par on the 17th hole and Schauffele won by one stroke.

The notoriously unpredictable Scottish weather and the course's location on the Firth of Forth can make for an interesting week. That was the case last year, when winds were gusting up to 30 mph at times. The winning score in 2019 was 22 under. High winds and rain are expected this weekend, with gusts higher than 40 mph forecast for the afternoon on Sunday.

This is the fifth edition of the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club. The tournament is one of five that make up the Rolex Series, the DP World Tour's five premier events. That means about half the field will be made up of the best players from the European Tour, and they'll want to prove themselves alongside the PGA Tour's elite golfers.
