Bruce's Picks (1 Live)
Can the Kraken really win back-to-back nights on the road?...
Bruce's Past Picks
After a bumpy road trip, the Blackhawks are glad to be back at United Center where they won 2 of 3 on their last homestand. Also tonight, apparently in goal is recently-added ex-Panther Spencer Knight, who's impressed in four Chicago starts with a 2.20 GAA and .928 saves. Back to his last three starts with Florida, Knight has won five of his last seven starts. Meanwhile, Seattle battles inconsistency and has been a poor investment (13-19-0) on the road. Though making a mild recovery with a pair of wins in his march starts, Philipp Grubauer has also endured a tough time in the Kraken goal, evidence by his 0-5-1 mark in February with a 4.73 GAA and .826 saves. Nashville might get our vote as the NHL's most disappointing side. The offense can't budge, which wasn't supposed to be an issue after adding Jonathan Marchessault and Steven Stamkos in the offseason. The result has been the lowest-scoring offense in the NHL (tied with Calgary at only 171 goals in 66 games). Meanwhile, the Blues are making a real charge at a West wild card spot with wins in 8 of 11, and the offense has been firing on all cylinders lately, piling up 12 goals across the last two games, wins over the Wild and Ducks. Joel Hofer likely gets the start in goal after excellent work vs the Wild in the 5-1 win last Saturday. Play Blues on Puck Line
Playoff buzz is in the air tonight at Montreal in a game that likely trades in a tight window.. The Sens have been flying since the 4 Nations break and hit Bell Centre tonight having won six in a row. A lot of that due to Linus Ullmark, who is 6-0-1 in goal this month with .913 saves as Ottawa's sold defense has allowed only 14 goals in the win streak. Meanwhile, the Canadiens returned home from a Western Conference road trip and proceeded to douse the Panthers, 3-1, as Sam Montembeault stopped 21 shots in goal. Montembeault has also won six of his last seven starts and has a 2.20 GAA and .926 saves in March. Hot goalies suggest lower scoring! Play Senators-Canadiens Under
Columbus has picked a bad time for its offense to stall; back-to-back 4-0 losses at home to the Rangers and VGK have dropped the Blue Jackets below the East playoff cut-line. All part of a current three-game skid and marks the third time Columbus has been blanked in the last five games (the Panthers notched a 3-0 win on March 6). Meanwhile, the Devils are at least scoring goals, even in their losses (7-3 loss to the Penguins on Saturday), but sit in a playoff spot after wins in three of four. Though Jacob Markstrom, who had a 1.30 GAA not long ago in January, needs to return to form in goal after being on the wrong end vs. the Penguins. Play Devils on ML
Quick chance to atone for the Lightning after getting stunned 4-3 last Thursday at Philly. That result is a real outlier over the past couple of weeks for the Flyers, who had lost five straight prior and responded to the TB scoreline by promptly getting blanked by the Canes at home on Saturday. The offense again went on the blink as it mostly has in the recent slump, as just 8 goals have been scored in those last six losses. Ivan Fedotov is also likely in goal tonight after losing his last three starts. Remember, Jon Cooper gave Jonas Johansson a rare start in the Lightning goal last Thursday; tonight, back to Andrei Vasilevsky, 10-3 in his last 13 starts. Play Lightning on Puck Line
Boston is looking for goals in the post-Brad Marchand era, but when we see a chance at a total beneath six goals in a game involving the Sabres, it gets our attention. In 12 of Buffalo's last 16 games, at least six goals have been scored, thanks largely to leaky Sabres defense and struggles in goal by Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who's getting worked into the ground by Lindy Ruff, making an eighth start already in March by St Patrick's Day!). UPL's numbers suggest a tired goalie...very subpar 4.19 GAA and .854 saves in March. Buffalo does have 10 goals across its last three games, however, and Tage Thompson continues to score (now on 34 goals this season; three in the last three games). Play Sabres-Bruins Over
Recent results suggest the Canucks might be into a playoff drive. Rick Tocchet looks to perhaps have Vancouver on track with wins in its last two over the Flames and Blackhawks as the offense has started to stir, with ten goals across those two games. The Canucks made the most of their 15 shots on goal yesterday vs. Chicago, scoring six, while Arturs Silovs stopped 17 of 19 shots on goal. Kevin Lankinen is back in the nets tonight. Meanwhile, Utah's playoff push is sputtering, with wins only in one of four and two of six as the offense has become choppy, only once scoring more than three in those last six. This looks a good deadline move, as Florida brought in goalie Vitek Vanecek from San Jose as a backup to Sergei Bobrovsky, after moving Spencer Knight to Chicago in the Seth Jones trade. Vanecek's debut with the Panthers went smoothly last Saturday vs. the Sabres, stopping all 21 shots in a 4-0 Florida win, and he gets his next shot tonight at UBS Arena. The champs who recently won six straight, have now lost two of three on this road trip after stumbling last night in Montreal, but have bounced back with wins after their last six defeats. Meanwhile, the playoff push for the Isles seems to have stalled, with three straight losses, scoring only one goal in each. Play Panthers on Puck Line
Not an easy ride on this road trip for the Oilers, losers in two of three at the Sabres, Devils, and Islanders, with the offense laboring in the process (only five goals scored in regulation time). Indeed, it's been bumpy for Edmonton since just before the 4 Nations break, winning only four of the last twelve, and just two of the last eight on the road. Erratic Stuart Skinner in goal also has only an .876 saves mark this month and has lost five straight starts on the road. Meanwhile, the Rangers might be ready to make an overdue move after winning their last two, and go back to vet GK Jonathan Quick, who blanked the Preds two starts ago. Play Rangers on Money Line
We test the recuperative powers for the Caps Bounce-back game here for the Caps after getting blanked 3-0 by the kings in their last outing. Washington had won five straight beforehand and scored 24 goals in the process, with Alex Ovechkin closing in on Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record, which made the flat effort at Los Angeles all the more puzzling. The Caps scored 7 in their previous game at Anaheim, with Aliaksei Protas notching his first NHL hat-trick in the process. The Sharks have shown slight improvement but remain vulnerable, as three losses preceded the win at Chicago before returning to the Tank from their recent road trip. Play Caps on Puck Line
The slate has been kind to the Preds the past week so we view this 4-game win streak with skepticism. Even Music City loyalists know it's too late for Nashville to make a move on a West playoff spot. Moreover, Anaheim isn't quite the chopped liver of the past, even as consecutive losses have dampened their already longshot playoff hopes. Though the Ducks do have some notable wins in recent weeks, and if nothing else, John Gibson is rested in goal, not having worked since March 5. Anaheim also romped to a 5-2 win over Juuse Saros in the Preds' last visit to Honda Center on January 25, though it was Lukas Dostal in goal that night for the Ducks. Play Ducks Money Line.
Edmonton risks Cal Pickard back in the nets tonight as Stuart Skinner gets a rest at UBS Arena against the Isles. When last seen on March 4 vs. Anaheim, Pickard was run off the ice, surrendering four goals in the first period before getting pulled in an eventual 6-2 loss to the Ducks. Two starts prior on February 23 vs. the Caps, Pickard also struggled badly, allowing six goals in a 7-3 loss. No wonder there was talk in Edmonton about dealing for a goalie at the deadline. Pickard might be just what the Isles need to see after a pair of 4-1 losses in So Cal vs. the Kings and Ducks prior to their return home. Play Islanders on Money Line.
Back home again for the Blue Jackets for the first time in two weeks (more than two weeks since last at Nationwide Arena on Feb. 25 vs. Dallas; the Stadium Series game at Ohio Stadium on March 1) as they cling to the last East playoff spot, with a chasing bunch on their heels. Worth noting that Columbus has won eight of its last nine as host (including the Ohio Stadium game), and continues to score goals, with Adam Fantilli recording a hat-trick in last Sunday's 7-3 win over the Rangers. Meanwhile, VGK might be in one of is occasional flat spots after losses to the Kings and Penguins, and has won just three of its last eleven away. Play Blue Jackets on Money Line
Finally a schedule break for the Blues, with five days to catch their breath after a grueling five-games-in-eight-days span last week. Playoff hopes have been revived, however, by six wins in eight, and 13 points across those games, with defense exceptionally good. Only 18 goals allowed in regulation time across that span, and Jordan Binnington is back in the nets tonight, having won seven of his last eight starts. The current buzz in Pittsburgh is GK Tristan Jarry's successful return to active duty and looking good (1.49 GAA) in wins over the Wild and VGK, but the Pens had lost eight of nine prior and still aren't scoring a lot of goals, just 7 across the past four games.
