What do they say about the best-laid plans of mice and men? Eintracht Frankfurt thought it might be clever to dismiss manager Dino Toppmöller with the squad enduring a rough patch earlier this month. After all, hadn't Bayer Leverkusen (Saturday's foe) done with same with Erik ten Hag back August, and recovered under Kasper Hjulmand? So much for philosophizing; SGE has accelerated its decline post-Toppmöller, the winless streak now seven amid a wretched January, allowing 17 goals in six matches. Unlike SGE, Bayer has advanced to the KO phase of the Champions League (Olympiacos next), and accomplished Czech striker Patrik Schick is bound to start converting more of these scoring chances headed his way. By a good margin the highest-scoring team in Europe, league-leader Bayern Munich is capable of taking care of the 3.5 total all by itself on Saturday at Red Bull Arena. Thru 17 Bundesliga matches, Vincent Kompany's side is on an astounding 66 goals, almost 4 pg; by comparison, Liga leader Barcelona, with its various attacking riches, sits on just 51 goals in two more matches. Harry Kane, on 20 goals, continues to battle Erling Haaland for the Golden Boot, but third-place Leipzig might think it can chase this match after putting six past Eintracht Frankfurt not long ago. Note 12 straight Bayern Munich scorelines in all competitions have exceeded 3.5 goals! Play Leipzig-Bayern Munich Over
No goals in the last three, no wins in the last eight...things aren't going so well at the moment for Werder Bremen, as not even the holiday break seemed to recharge the batteries in Tuesday's 3-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund after the scheduled weekend clash vs. Hoffenheim was snowed out, and Bremen falling closer to the drop zone. The reverse fixture way back on August 23 didn't go so well for WB, either, as Eintracht Frankfurt ran out 4-1 winners. SGE has been minus top scorer Jonathan Burkhardt (calf) since late November, but has scored five goals in two games since returning from the holiday break and readies for another go in the Champions League next Wednesday. While chasing a European spot is looking increasingly difficult, this still seems a worthwhile risk with Union Berlin, which has settled comfortably into the Bundesliga's mid-table and stretched its current unbeaten streak to three out of the holiday break with a lively 2-2 draw vs. Mainz. Wins over Koln and Leipzig preceded, and there's a Peter Crouch-like weapon in gangly striker Ilyas Ansah, who leads UB with five goals. Meanwhile Augsburg is falling dangerously close to the Bundesliga drop zone (just two points beneath), and an offense blanked four times in the past five games offers little in the form of encouragement at the moment. Though still five points above the drop zone, things still aren't going too well at the moment for Werder Bremen. It was five straight without a win before the winter break, and Bremen's return to action on the weekend vs. Hoffenheim was snowed out, so this is the first action in more than three weeks. Meanwhile, everything is still in front of BVB even after the 3-3 draw on the weekend vs. Eintracht Frankfurt, still solidly in second place in the Bundesliga table behind Bayern Munich and looking god to advance to the KO phase of the Champions League. Serhou Guirassy, who scored 34 goals last term, looks ready to kick-on after failing to notch a Bundesliga goal since last October. Play BVB on Spread
Goals have been flying in from all angles on the pitch in recent games featuring these two sides and no reason to think anything differently on Tuesday. As for Stuttgart, it's scored four goals three times across its last four games, most recently on Saturday when burying Bayer Leverkusen 4-1, helped by a first-half brace from Jamie Leweling. Meanwhile, Frankfurt games have averaged better than 4 goals this season, and they're still catching their breath from Friday's shootout vs. Borussia Dortmund than ended 3-3. The Bundesliga returns from its winter break with Bayern Munich galloping away at the top and BVB chasing, but looking good for another Champions League invite. The cut-line for Europe looks to be where Eintracht Frankfurt now occupies 7th, but mostly indifferent form since Halloween suggests its return to the Champs League is doubtful unless some of the swashbuckling we saw in autumn resurfaces. It would help if top scorer Jonathan Burkardt (out since November; calf) returns soon. More likely here to see BVB fire the winning shots, especially as Serhou Guirassy, not participating in AFCON as his Guinea failed to qualify, is overdue a goal (none in Bundesliga since October 31) after firing in 34 last term. Goals have been flying into the net in games lately involving these two and see no reason why that should change on Saturday. Union Berlin offered one of the shockers of last week in Europe when cooling down a surging Leipzig 3-1, but there had been at least four goals in FCU's previous two matches as well, and top scorer Ilyas Ansah (on the scoresheet again last week) has been getting ample chances to do damage in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Koln recently featured a four-match stretch of at least four goals scored in each game, as top scorer and teenage sensation Said El Mala continues to turn heads, recently scoring vs. Wolfsburg & St. Pauli. The door has opened for BVB to climb into second place in the Bundesliga after RB Leipzig stumbled on Saturday vs. Union Berlin. Recent trends vs. Sunday foe Freiburg are about as one-sided as can be...in the last five meetings, all BVB wins, it has outscored Freiburg 20-4. Freiburg's challenge will be to put one past Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel, who's only allowed 11 goals all season as BVB has the best defensive record in the Bundesliga outside of Bayern Munich. Also perhaps a chance for Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy to get back on the horse after scoring just once in his last ten; he netted in his only appearance vs. Freiburg last season en route to his 21 goals. Hamburg has had some wild swings in results this season, including some drubbings like 5-0 vs. Bayern Munich (which can be excused) and then last week's 4-1 loss to Koln (which can't be excused). Scoring less than one goal pg, Hamburg is going to be in a relegation fight if it can't pull clear. This might be no time to get better vs. a capable and win-hungry BVB that was drubbed midweek by Man City in the Champions League, but has a definite firepower edge with Serhou Guirassy, a 20-goal scorer last term and back on the scoresheet last weekend vs. Augsburg. First things first here...look for some alternative totals on this game to get a better price than -161 on another Eintracht Frankfurt over. The basics for SGE...seven Bundesliga matches, 37 goals scored, clearly the highest scorelines in Europe. Add in three Champions League matches with six goals each, and we've got 10 matches with 55 goals involving Frankfurt! St Pauli not the most explosive Bundesliga entry but if Frankfurt is involved, we look over. Now, for the price...this -161 on over 2.5 is the best we can offer from the available prices. In the marketplace, however, an alternative total at 3.5 goals would reward an over at roughly +145; look for those spots and don't be afraid of the over! Play St Pauli-Frankfurt Over
