Tulane coach Willie Fritz is likely headed to a Power Five program (with Georgia Tech the front-runner) after a remarkable turnaround with the Green Wave that saw them go from a 10-loss to a 10-win club and consistently looking like the class of the AAC this season. But their lone blip in conference play came against a UCF team that bolted to a 24-7 lead and fended off a late rally. The Knights have been flat twice since, with an upset loss to Navy and a near-catastrophic loss to South Florida last week. But they should be ready for this one and, with the potential distraction surrounding Fritz's status, the Knights are a value as an underdog.
AAC Championship Game from New Orleans. UCF won at Tulane during the season 38-31 as QB John Rhys Plumlee was responsible for 308 of UCF’s 468 total yards on offense while scoring twice on the ground and throwing another touchdown. However, he has been dealing with some injury issues and missed the second half last week against USF with a hamstring injury. If he sits, this is a Tulane no-brainer and I think it's close to the same even if limited. If Plumlee can’t play, Mikey Keene would start for the Knights.
For several days, it appeared as if Tulane coach Willie Fritz was signed and sealed with -- though not delivered to -- Georgia Tech. He will stay in New Orleans (for now), but we've seen in recent weeks that teams with coaches on the move or hoping to move tend to stumble. Fritz might have a Coach of the Year trophy to display on his mantel, but underdog Central Florida has superior talent, which was on display with a seven-point win at Tulane. UCF QB John Rhys Plumlee is ailing -- yet again. His backup has accumulated lots of experience in relief and would be at ease in a starter role.
