Farleigh Dickinson is a scoring machine, both themselves and what they give up to opposing teams. On the season they're averaging nearly 78 points per game and giving up nearly 75 PPG. In nine of their last 12 games, one team has scored 77 or more points. Check out Early Edge in 5 on YouTube at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday to hear more of my rationale...
Went 1-1 in First Four picks on Tuesday -- still not sure how Mississippi State didn't beat Pittsburgh in all honesty. The refs sure seemed like they wanted the Panthers to advance. Brutal game to watch offensively. Texas Southern usually thrives in March under Coach Johnny Jones as the Tigers were 7-11 in SWAC regular-season play but then swept to the conference tournament title. They know what it takes to win in the First Four, having done so each of the past two years. TSU also played a monster non-conference schedule to cash checks for the athletic program, so that 14-20 overall record is misleading. FDU didn't win its regular-season or conference tournament title but got the NEC bid because Merrimack was ineligible. The Knights will be at a huge height (and NCAA Tournament experience) disadvantage tonight.
Texas Southern is playing in its third straight play-in game, having won the previous two by eight and nine points. Don't be fooled by the Tigers' 14-20 record; they were talented enough to be the preseason SWAC favorites and took down Arizona State during a murderous non-conference schedule. While the Tigers went 7-11 in conference play, they got healthier and turned it on in the SWAC Tournament. Texas Southern doesn't shoot well from deep but features four players who average double-figures in scoring; the Tigers rank 68th nationally in rebounding. FDU, which has the nation's shortest starting five, is an amazing turnaround story, but the Knights rank 361st in defensive efficiency.
