2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of Year odds: NFC on a very unusual 'winning' streak

Cincinnati's Joe Burrow is the clear-cut favorite to win 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, but one unusual trend may hint the wise bet is on an NFC player.

William Hill sportsbook has officially released its full list of 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year NFL futures odds, and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is the clear-cut +275 betting favorite. And as the first overall pick, Burrow should be favored – although no Bengals quarterback has ever won the award. There's one trend, though, that many bettors may not be aware of for this award: An NFC player has won it 13 years in a row. That's simply not explainable.

In 2006, former University of Texas quarterback Vince Young was the Offensive Rookie of the Year for the Tennessee Titans. He easily beat out New Orleans wide receiver Marques Colston and Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew.

Frankly, Young wasn't all that great statistically that year, completing just 51.5 percent of his passes for 2,199 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 picks for a horrendous rating of 66.7 that would easily have been last in the NFL last year. However, he did run for 552 yards and seven scores and improved the Titans by four wins. That was the last time an AFC player won Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Here are the winners since:

  • 2007: Vikings running back Adrian Peterson
  • 2008: Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan
  • 2009: Vikings receiver Percy Harvin
  • 2010: Rams quarterback Sam Bradford
  • 2011: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton
  • 2012: Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III
  • 2013: Packers running back Eddie Lacy
  • 2014: Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
  • 2015: Rams running back Todd Gurley
  • 2016: Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott
  • 2017: Saints running back Alvin Kamara
  • 2018: Giants running back Saquon Barkley
  • 2019: Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray

Raiders running back Josh Jacobs was in position to win it last year before a late-season injury. Murray and Newton are the only first-overall picks to win the award in the last nine years. Of course, Newton is still looking for a team this offseason. Harvin, Bradford and Lacy are all out of the league now, although Harvin is making noise about a comeback.

The NFC player with the shortest odds to win the award this year is Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb at +1400 – tied for fifth-best odds on the board. Stick with SportsLine as over the next several weeks we will profile all the Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year betting options.
