Who are the Mississippi Senate candidates?
Scott Colom (D): Colom is the district attorney for Mississippi's 16th Judicial District, which covers Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Clay and Noxubee counties, and he has held the job since 2016 after winning elections in 2015, 2019 and 2023. He earned a bachelor's degree from Millsaps College and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin. President Joe Biden nominated him to a federal judgeship in Mississippi in 2022, but the nomination was never confirmed. Colom won the March 10 Democratic primary with 73% of the vote, and he would be the first Black U.S. senator from Mississippi since Reconstruction.
Cindy Hyde-Smith (R): Hyde-Smith has held the seat since April 2018, when Gov. Phil Bryant appointed her to replace the retiring Thad Cochran, making her the first woman to represent Mississippi in Congress. She previously served as the state's agriculture commissioner and was a state senator. She won the 2018 special election runoff against Democrat Mike Espy, 53.6% to 46.4%, and won a full term in 2020 against Espy again, 54.1% to 44.1%. Hyde-Smith won the March Republican primary with 80.8% of the vote. Independent Ty Pinkins, a lawyer who was the Democratic nominee for this seat in 2024, is also on the ballot.
How has Mississippi voted in the past?
Mississippi has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1982. Republican candidates carried the state in the last two presidential elections, by 22.9 points in 2024 and 16.5 points in 2020. Hyde-Smith's two wins against Espy came by about 7 points in 2018 and about 10 points in 2020. Major race ratings from Cook Political Report, Inside Elections, and Sabato's Crystal Ball listed the 2026 race as solid or safe Republican in August, and an August Data for Progress poll had Hyde-Smith ahead of Colom, 47% to 41%.
