Flipped back and forth all morning, but this is a do-or-die situation for the Packers, who are dreadful on both lines and struggling without a running game. Matt LaFleur will be firmly on the hot seat if Green Bay drops this game. Jalon Daniels has not thrown for 200 yards in 365 days. He’s 1-5 as a starter since in college, and Tampa Bay has lost by 4+ points in all of its games. The Packers have tons of issues, but their QB play and pass catchers are strong, and they will be throwing. Daniels will move the ball with his legs, but can he do it for four quarters against a real NFL defense? This is a play on principle as well as matchup.
There are numerous reasons to side with the warm-weather Bay team. Green Bay has stunk. Its offensive line has been touched by injuries, resulting in the league's statistically worst ground game and an inability to protect the passer. QB Jordan Love is 0-9 ATS when the Packers have been favored by three or more points on the road. All of those factors are overshadowed by another: The Bucs will start an undrafted rookie QB, Jalon Daniels, who must breathe life into the 27th-ranked offense. Having played last Thursday, the Pack get extra R&R and can pore over tape of Daniels from his college days.
The Bucs won't have Baker Mayfield for this game, but I don't know how much it'll matter as the Bucs were already last in net yards per pass attempt. The key here is the Bucs defense, which ranks second in yards per rush and now gets to face a much-maligned Packers offensive line, which may be the worst in the league. I love catching more than a field goal at home against that type of fatal flaw. There's a 4 available in the market, but I'd be OK playing +3.5 if that remains the consensus number as well.
This is Jalon Daniels' first NFL start, and I think he's going to lean on his legs a lot Sunday. Rookies don't want to force throws into tight windows, and when things get cloudy downfield, Daniels has never been shy about tucking it and taking off. He ran for 1,445 yards and 23 touchdowns at Kansas, and that number actually sells him short. Sacks count against rushing yards in college. They don't in the NFL. Sure, the Bucs probably won't call a ton of designed runs for him. That said, game script could do the work. If Tampa falls behind, Green Bay will likely sit back in softer coverage, and that's when Daniels can rip off some bigger runs late in the game.
For my field goal prop this week, I'll roll with Green Bay rookie kicker, Trey Smack, who has made multiple three-pointers in 2 of 3 games this season. Plus, Tampa Bay surrendered a league high 10 made field goals through the season's first three weeks. In what should be an ugly game in Florida on Sunday, the Packers' rookie is my top value play for kickers this week.
The Bucs are turning to UDFA Jalon Daniels at quarterback this week, and I think the market is short-changing the Bucs' top receivers as a result. Even with the team ranked last in net yards per attempt, Egbuka has had five catches and 60 yards in two of his three games. The Packers have been torched by Justin Jefferson (playing mostly with a backup QB) and Drake London, while Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell also topped 50 yards in their matchup. I see Egbuka as a worthy play up to 44.5, and if his number remains this low I may consider laddering him up to 75 yards for the added value.
