Suddenly, a Chargers team that started 0-4 has done an about-face and is now 6-6. Washington, on the other hand, has lost five of seven. Even in the wins, you could argue poor play by the Seahawks and Giants had more to do with the outcome than the Redskins’ execution. Yet, Washington has been solid in non-division road games. The Redskins had their best performance in an overtime loss to the Saints and defeated the Seahawks and Rams on the road. Look for this trend to hold up Sunday as they get nearly a touchdown in Los Angeles.
The last time the Redskins were in Los Angeles they handed the Rams one of their three losses on the season. Washington was completely healthy then. Right now they're banged up everywhere on offense, but Kirk Cousins still manages to put points on the board and being on the road isn't a bad thing for them. Their season average for points scored is 22 7 ppg and their road average in six games is 22.2 ppg. They went into Seattle and won outright, 17-14, and they almost pulled off the upset at New Orleans, leading 31-13 in the fourth quarter only to lose 34-31 in overtime. Cousins has been quite comfortable on the road. The advantage he should have this week is the running game working with Samaje Perine just because everyone else has had success running against the Chargers (No. 31 in NFL allowing 129.8 ypg). If Perine and the offensive line take advantage, Cousins becomes even more difficult to slow on play-action. The Chargers are playing well right now, but this is a great spot for the Redskins to win. The advice here is to get a piece of the money line and the spread, especially if it hits 7. I'm on Washington.
The "other" team in LA is red-hot right now, playing well on both sides of the ball. The Chargers have one of the best set of pass rushers in the league and will take full advantage of a banged-up Redskins offensive line. Lay the points.
The Chargers have been on a roll since their 0-4 start, with their only two losses coming in close games against the Patriots and Jaguars, two teams heading for the playoffs. The Redskins have performed admirably in the face of a rash of injuries, but their poor health seemed to catch up with them last Thursday in a blowout loss to the Cowboys. The Chargers sport an even more vicious pass rush and elite pass defense along with a top-tier QB and outstanding passing offense. Washington just doesn't have the personnel to attack L.A.'s weakness, and Kirk Cousins can only do so much. I trust the Chargers D to keep the back door closed and cover this number.
