Toronto is winless on the road in the early going, while the Spurs have to be brimming with confidence after back-to-back wins in Phoenix early this week. Victor Wembanyama was utterly devastating on Thursday and the Spurs 100 percent can win this outright -- even without Devin Vassell -- if he stays out of foul trouble. That's really going to be the story of Wemby's rookie season.
Scottie Barnes has taken on a more prominent role with Fred VanVleet gone. Not only is he averaging 21.3 points per game, but he has provided averages of 9.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists. That has enabled him to combine for at least 13 rebounds and assists in all six games this season. As he continues to log heavy minutes, look for him to hit this over again.
The Spurs have a very exciting, ultra athletic, young nucleus. Victor Wembanyama rightfully gets the bulk of the attention but Jeremy Sochan is a very interesting player in his own right with a unicorn skill-set. Spurs HC Greg Popovich unexpectedly made the 6'8'' 20 year Sochan his starting Point Guard and so far it's worked. Sochan averaged only 2.5 assists last season but that number has doubled to 5.2 this year. Sochan can contribute in a variety of ways and he's still just scratching the surface from a developmental standpoint. SA will be without their second leading scorer in Devin Vassell and I expect Sochan to get a few extra shots up. Look for the point forward to to stuff the stat sheet vs TOR.
