UFC 247: Oddsmakers & bettors giving Dominick Reyes little chance of upsetting Jon Jones
There are many MMA experts who believe that Jon "Bones" Jones is the greatest mixed martial arts fighter in history, and Jones puts his light heavyweight title on the line Saturday night at UFC 247 in Houston against unbeaten fellow American Dominick Reyes. That fight likely starts around 11:30 p.m. ET or so from the Toyota Center and on pay-per-view.
While Jones' record is 25-1, he technically has never been "beaten." That defeat was to a middling Matt Hamill in the "Ultimate Fighter 10" finale on Dec. 5, 2009, when Jones was disqualified for illegal elbows in the first round. Considering Hamill was just 13-8 in his career and lost to some no-names, it's quite likely Jones wins that fight easily otherwise.
Jones, ranked as the UFC's pound-for-pound king, has not been an underdog for a fight since way back at UFC 94 when Jones closed at around +140 against Stephan Bonnar (-220) and "Bones" won by unanimous decision. Jones' current 17-fight unbeaten streak in the UFC is the longest in company history.
It's the first UFC title shot for Reyes (12-0), who is ranked No. 4 in the light heavyweight division. He's 6-0 since joining the UFC and beat Chris Weidman by first-round knockout in October 2019 in his most recent fight. Reyes' six-fight UFC winning streak at light heavyweight is the longest active streak in the division because Jones had a no-contest vs. Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 (not a loss so Jones' unbeaten streak intact). Nine of Reyes' 12 fights ended in the first round.
On the DraftKings MMA odds, Jones is -455 to win and Reyes +350. A total of 78 percent of all bets are on Jones to win (regardless of how) and 62 percent of the handle. That the fight goes the distance is a +165 underdog; that it doesn't is -230. Jones' past two bouts have gone to the judges and nine of his wins are by decision. The favored margin of victory for Jones is by submission at +210.
