There are so many things that go into identifying strong plays at wide receiver on a weekly basis for NFL DFS. Examining game scripts, projecting volume, and weighing the matchup are some of the most common factors, but that is just the beginning. Breaking down a matchup on a macro level often isn't enough. Some of the league's worst pass defenses still have an excellent cornerback on the roster, while other perceived tough matchups have individual corners that you can pick on.
In DFS, being able to identify when a receiver is in a particularly advantageous matchup can make the difference in taking down tournaments or going home with nothing.
In 2018, few were better at identifying advantageous matchups for receivers than DFS pro Jacob Gibbs. His WR draft rankings finished 22nd among 154 analysts in FantasyPros' Expert Accuracy Contest, while his in-season WR rankings were 23rd of 125. Through the first eight weeks of the 2018 season, no expert ranked the WR position more accurately than Gibbs did.
Week 6's matchup column highlighted big weeks for Terry McLaurin, Odell Beckham Jr., and Curtis Samuel. Gibbs also was Week 6's most accurate ranker among nearly 150 experts according to FantasyPros' accuracy contest. Last week, Gibbs' must-play matchup highlighted T.Y. Hilton, who saw 11 targets and came down with a touchdown against Houston's weak secondary.
Before you set your DFS lineups or pick which WR to start this week in your Fantasy leagues, you'll want to see Gibbs' analysis and breakdown of which WR vs. CB matchups to target and avoid in Week 8.
One thing we can tell you: Gibbs loves the matchup for Courtland Sutton against Indianapolis.
"Even while playing with Emmanuel Sanders, Sutton ranked 19th among receivers in air yards and 13th in targets on the year. He's also ninth in the NFL in red zone targets and has seen 37 percent of Flacco's red zone targets." Gibbs said. "Any addition to Sutton's already Fantasy-friendly role would make him one of the top wideouts in the league from a volume perspective. In Week 8, Sutton will look to take advantage of any additional volume in a matchup against Pierre Desir of the Colts. Desir opened the season with a couple strong performances, but he has fallen off in a big way over the past four weeks. His highest PFF grade during that time is 50.1, and he's allowed opposing receivers to catch 17 of 27 targets for 280 yards and a score. No player has seen more targets per game against over the past three weeks than Desir."
Gibbs also has identified a wide receiver who has a huge speed advantage over his opponent in Week 8. This wideout is facing a team that has some of the slowest perimeter corners in the league, and he has slate-breaking potential in this spot. You ABSOLUTELY need to see the complete breakdown.
