There are so many things that go into identifying strong plays at wide receiver on a weekly basis for NFL DFS. Examining game scripts, projecting volume, and weighing the matchup are some of the most common factors, but that is just the beginning. Breaking down a matchup on a macro level often isn't enough. Some of the league's worst pass defenses still have an excellent cornerback on the roster, while other perceived tough matchups have individual corners that you can pick on.
In DFS, being able to identify when a receiver is in a particularly advantageous matchup can make the difference in taking down tournaments or going home with nothing.
In 2018, few were better at identifying advantageous matchups for receivers than DFS pro Jacob Gibbs. His WR draft rankings finished 22nd among 154 analysts in FantasyPros' Expert Accuracy Contest, while his in-season WR rankings were 23rd of 125. Through the first eight weeks of the 2018 season, no expert ranked the WR position more accurately than Gibbs did.
Last week's matchup column highlighted big weeks for Terry McLaurin, Odell Beckham Jr., and Curtis Samuel. Gibbs also was last week's most accurate ranker among nearly 150 experts according to FantasyPros' accuracy contest.
Before you set your DFS lineups or pick which WR to start this week in your Fantasy leagues, you'll want to see Gibbs' analysis and breakdown of which WR vs. CB matchups to target and avoid in Week 7.
One thing we can tell you: Gibbs loves the matchup for T.Y. Hilton against Houston.
"The over/under in this one is 48 points, and the Colts are one-point home favorites. We've seen Hilton post much better splits at home throughout his career, and he should be fresh coming out of the Bye Week." Gibbs said. "Hilton will likely draw the 35-year old Johnathan Joseph in this spot. Joseph was the NFL's most-targeted cornerback through five weeks before missing Week 6 with a hamstring injury. If the hamstring forces Joseph to miss another game, then Phillip Gaines will be forced into a role. Gaines is bad enough that he was behind both Joseph and rookie Lonnie Johnson, who PFF has ranked third-worst in coverage grade among 117 qualified corners. In his first taste of action this season, Gaines gave up five catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns. "
Gibbs also has identified a wide receiver who has a huge speed advantage over his opponent in Week 7. This wideout is facing a team that has some of the slowest perimeter corners in the league, and he has slate-breaking potential in this spot. You ABSOLUTELY need to see the complete breakdown.
