Today's top picks: Why the Rays will beat the Red Sox and more MLB and soccer expert bets for Sunday, August 1

The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Sunday, August 1, on The Early Edge podcast

Jonathan Coachman is joined by expert sports bettors Justin Perri, Allan Bell and Larry Hartstein on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for Major League Baseball and soccer for Sunday, August 1.

Coachman starts things off with two SportsLine Plays of the Day, both from the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup final match between Team USA and Mexico (8:30 p.m. ET): Both teams to score (+100) and the second half as the highest-scoring half (+105).

Perri's three-pack of picks comes in MLB. The first is Over 8.5 runs (-105) in the Cubs-Nationals game (1:05 p.m. ET). "(Chicago's) Adbert Alzolay has been tough to trust the last few weeks," he says. "He's been struggling against left-handed hitting. The Nationals have a lot of left-handed hitting. (Washington's) Erick Fedde has been even worse - 7.50 ERA, 1.75 WHIP since the All-Star break."

He also likes Over 9 runs (+100) in the Brewers-Braves game (1:20 p.m. ET). "(Atlanta's) Charlie Morton has allowed three or more runs in five of his last six starts at home," Perri says. "Truist Park is a great place to hit the baseball, air density is way down, great hitting environment, winds blowing out, should be an easy Over."

Perri's last pick is the Giants (-115) over the Astros through the first five innings (4:05 p.m. ET). "(Houston's) Luis Garcia has struggled a little bit on the road," he says. "(San Francisco's) Logan Webb, on the other hand, has been incredible at home. Webb has been very effective against right-handed batters all season, and the Astros have a lot of right-handed batters."

Bell follows with his only play of the day: the Rays (-157) to beat the Red Sox (7:08 p.m. ET). "They've won four straight at home against the Boston Red Sox," he says of the Rays. "This season, after the Tampa Bay Rays win a game, they are 44-18 to win the next game."

Hartstein closes things out with a prop bet: Texas' Mike Foltynewicz to go Over 3.5 strikeouts in the Mariners-Rangers game (2:35 p.m. ET). "He's not a good pitcher at all, but he's had three good outings against the Mariners where he went seven innings, seven innings, 6 â…” innings (with) five Ks, two Ks and five Ks," Larry says. "He's also gone Over this number in six of his last seven (starts)."
