Today's top picks: Why the Brewers will beat the Pirates and more MLB, PGA and Hot Dog Eating Contest expert bets for Sunday, July 4
The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Sunday, July 4, on The Early Edge podcast
Jonathan Coachman is joined by expert sports bettors Justin Perri and Larry Hartstein on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for Major League Baseball and the PGA for Sunday, July 4, while Jacob Hallex makes a guest appearance to chime in on the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Hallex starts things off by taking the field (+1000) on the men's side in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest (12:30 p.m. ET). He then takes Under 73.5 hot dogs eaten by the men's winner. "(The record of) 75 was set last year (by Joey Chestnut) during the pandemic, when they had this contest indoors," Hallex says. "Those are abnormal eating conditions."
Perri then jumps in with a trio of picks, all in MLB. He starts with the Brewers -1.5 runs (-120) against the Pirates (1:05 p.m. ET). "The Brewers have scored five or more runs in 12 of their last 15 games, seven or more runs in six of the last eight games," Perri says. "Meanwhile, the Pirates have not even been able to break past two runs in seven of their last eight."
His next play is Over nine runs in the Padres-Phillies game (1:05 p.m. ET). "I believe (San Diego starter Blake Snell's) road ERA is over 10. It's pretty ridiculous," Perri says. "(Philadelphia's) Vince Velasquez also isn't all that great."
Perri wraps it up with Over 10 runs in the Orioles-Angels contest (4:07 p.m. ET). "The Orioles are the fourth-best team against lefties in the majors this year," he says. "I just think they're going to be able to score a couple runs. And I expect the Angels to be able to score against (Baltimore's) Thomas Eshelman."
Coach is up next with three plays in the PGA's Rocket Mortgage Classic. He likes Joaquin Niemann (-150) to beat Troy Merritt head-to-head (2:05 p.m. ET) and go on to win the tournament. "Niemann does not even have one bogey yet in this tournament," Coach says. "I'm going to bet that he will take his experience and beat Troy Merritt heads up in this round today, and he will win the Rocket Mortgage Classic."
In another matchup, Coach likes Hank Lebioda (+110) over Cameron Davis (1:55 p.m. ET). "Lebioda last week had a great Sunday, came back, finished top 10," he says. "He's really, really good, but a lot of people don't know about him."
Hartstein wraps things up with a pair of MLB plays. The first: He likes the Phillies +1.5 runs (-140) against the Padres. "The Padres look tired to me on this road trip," Hartstein says. "I don't trust the Phillies' bullpen, but I will take them on the run line."
Larry closes out with Oakland's James Kaprielian going Under 6.5 strikeouts (-130) in the Red Sox-Athletics game (4:07 p.m. ET). "He got six against them last time, but he's coming off a 105-pitch effort," Hartstein says. "He had not gone over 100 pitches all season."
