Today's top picks: Why the Athletics will cover against the Rangers and more MLB expert bets for Sunday, Aug. 8
The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Sunday, Aug. 8, on The Early Edge podcast
Jonathan Coachman is joined by expert sports bettors Allan Bell and Larry Hartstein on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for Major League Baseball for Sunday, Aug. 8.
Coach starts things off with the SportsLine Play of the Day: The Brewers (-111) to beat the Giants (2:10 p.m. ET). "The Brewers made a big mistake (on Saturday)," he says. "They're going to bounce back today."
Bell has two picks, both from Major League Baseball. The first is the Athletics to cover the -1.5 run line (-140) against the Rangers (4:07 p.m. ET). "Rangers pitcher Jordan Lyles has lost four straight and given up 18 earned runs in those four," Allan says. "If you look at the Rangers in the last two days, they've used 10 relief pitchers against the Athletics. If the A's can get to the Rangers' bullpen early, then we're sitting pretty."
He also likes the Yankees (-135) to defeat the Mariners (1:05 p.m. ET). "The Yankees have won eight out of their last nine and are 63 percent straight-up after a win," Bell says. "This team has a feel to it."
Hartstein's pair of picks also come in MLB. The first is a prop bet: Under 6.5 strikeouts for Cincinnati's Tyler Mahle (+110) in the Reds-Pirates game (1:10 p.m. ET). "His last three starts - five Ks, two Ks, five Ks," Larry says. "We have a hitter's ump for this one. The Pirates strike out the third-fewest times in all of baseball. He's going to pitch well."
Larry closes things out with the Phillies (-160) to beat the Mets (1:05 p.m. ET). "(The Phillies have recorded) seven straight wins, the Mets are cratering, they've lost eight of 10," he says. "(New York's) Taijuan Walker, since the All-Star Game, has been terrible. Four starts, 20 earned runs, seven homers allowed in 15 innings. This guy's getting lit up."
