Today's picks: Why UNC Wilmington will cover against Drake, plus more college basketball and MLB for Monday, March 21
The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Monday, March 21, on The Early Edge podcast
Allan Bell is joined by expert sports bettors Micah Roberts, Zack Cimini, John Bollman and Larry Hartstein on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for college basketball and MLB for Monday, March 21.
Allan starts things off with the SportsLine Play of the Day, which is in college hoops: Middle Tennessee State (-4.5) to cover against Boston University in the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational (6 p.m. ET). "The Blue Raiders were the No. 1 team against the spread this season," Bell says. "MTSU is 81 percent against the spread as a favorite. The Blue Raiders are 72 percent against the spread in neutral-site games."
Roberts is up next with a CBI quarterfinals pick of his own. He likes UNC Wilmington (+6.5) to cover against Drake (1 p.m. ET). "This is the little engine that could," Micah says in reference to the Seahawks. "I don't know how they do it. Defensively, they allow 44 percent shooting. Offensively, they only shoot 41 percent. No wonder they're an underdog every day. But you don't have a metric to account for heart, and this team has it. … I could see them winning outright."
Cimini follows with another college hoops play. He likes Coastal Carolina (-3.5) to cover against Florida Gulf Coast in the quarterfinals of The Basketball Classic (7 p.m. ET). "The Chanticleers are a much more physical team," Zack says. "They're going to be able to beat (Florida Gulf Coast) up and have an edge with rebounds. They were 28th in the country in rebounds. In their opening-round game last week against Maryland Eastern Shore, they had 44."
Bollman is up next with a pair of MLB futures. The first is Under 75.5 wins for the Cincinnati Reds. "They just traded Sonny Gray, Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez. They're going into a rebuild," he says. "They only won 83 games last year. The Cubs, the Cards and the Brewers also got better."
John's second play is Over 91.5 wins for the Toronto Blue Jays. "I honestly think this is going to be the best team in the league this year, other than the Dodgers," he says. "They added Kevin Gausman on a multi-year deal, they traded for Matt Chapman, who is a platinum-glove infielder. They won 91 games last season. … I can see them winning 100 games this season."
Hartstein wraps things up with a pick in college basketball. He likes Michigan (+5) to cover against Villanova in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday (7:29 p.m. ET). "I just liked what they did to Tennessee," Larry says. "I did not see that type of performance coming, holding the Vols to 2-of-18 from deep. This team has the talent to match up. This game will be tight."
