Today's picks: Why the Warriors will beat the Grizzlies, plus more NBA, NHL, MLB and soccer for Tuesday, May 3
The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Tuesday, May 3, on The Early Edge podcast
Jonathan Coachman is joined by expert sports bettors Mike Barner, Martin W. Green and Larry Hartstein on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for the NBA, NHL, MLB and soccer for Tuesday, May 3.
Coach kicks things off with three SportsLine Plays of the Day. The first is in the NHL: The Rangers (-130) to beat the Penguins in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series (7 p.m. ET). "Straight up, New York is 72 percent this season as a favorite," he says. "Straight up against Pittsburgh, 75 percent."
The second play is in the NBA: The Bucks (+5) to cover against the Celtics in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series (7 p.m. ET). "You're going to give me five points, and the Bucks? The defending champions?" Coach says. "I don't care who they're playing, I don't care if they're playing on the moon. I'm taking the Milwaukee Bucks."
The final SportsLine Play of the Day is in Major League Baseball: The Blue Jays (-135) to beat the Yankees in the middle contest of their three-game set (7:07 p.m. ET). "This is a proud team, it's a great team, and they think they are the World Series favorites," Coach says. "Tonight, they make a statement."
Green is up next with a pair of soccer plays. The first is a parlay in the Champions League: Liverpool on the money line and Over 1.5 goals (-105) in the second leg of their semifinal matchup against Villarreal (3 p.m. ET). "Liverpool's defense is very strong," he says. "Liverpool has Thiago Alcantara pulling the strings in midfield, putting in through balls for Liverpool's very, very quick forwards. So I think Liverpool should have a lot of joy on the counterattack in this game."
Martin's second play is in the English League Championship: Both teams to score (-125) in the match between Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest (2 p.m. ET). "Both of these teams are in great form," he says. "Bournemouth have banged in 10 goals in their last four matches, so they're going to be confident of getting on the scoresheet in this one. However, Nottingham Forest won nine of their last 10 games, they've scored in all nine. It finished 2-1 to Bournemouth when the teams met earlier this season."
Barner follows with a pair of NBA plays. First, he likes the Warriors (-130) to beat the Grizzlies in Game 2 of their Western Conference semifinal series (9:30 p.m. ET). "They barely won Game 1, but the scary part for the Grizzlies is, they lost a game in which Steph Curry and Klay Thompson shot a combined 35.9 percent from the field, and Draymond Green only played 17 minutes before being ejected," he says. "I think this is another close game that comes down to the final minutes, but I like the Warriors to go up 2-0 before the series shifts to their home arena."
Mike's second play is Over 7.5 rebounds for Memphis' Jaren Jackson Jr. in the Warriors-Grizzlies contest. "Jackson had 10 rebounds in Game 1," he says. "He played the Warriors twice during the regular season, had at least eight rebounds in both games. The Warriors like to play small, so that should help him considerably."
Coach jumps back in with an MLB play. He likes the Rockies (-140) to beat the Nationals in the opener of their three-game set (8:40 p.m. ET). "The Rockies are great at home. The Nationals, they're terrible," he says.
Hartstein wraps things up with his own MLB play. He likes the Brewers -1.5 runs (+105) against the Reds in their three-game series opener (7:40 p.m. ET). "The Brewers got shut out on Sunday. I think they're going to be in an angry mood," he says. "The Reds are 3-19, they've slashed the payroll, they have a bunch of guys in the bullpen that should not be in the majors. … The Reds are last in ERA, run differential, OPS, pretty much every category."
