Today's picks: Why the Giants will beat the Brewers, plus more MLB for Sunday, July 17

The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Sunday, July 17, on The Early Edge podcast

Allan Bell is joined by expert sports bettors Mike McClure, John Bollman and Micah Roberts on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for Major League Baseball for Sunday, July 17.

Bell starts things off with the SportsLine Play of the Day: the Marlins (+135) to beat the Phillies and avoid a three-game sweep (1:40 p.m. ET). "(The Marlins) have played the most one-run games in Major League Baseball this year," he says. "Three of four games against the Pirates ended with one-run winning margins, so did the opener against Philly. Both of these teams allow an average of 4.2 runs per game and the Phillies score just under half a run more."

McClure is up next with his play. He likes Over 4 runs for New York (-125) in the Yankees-Red Sox three-game series finale (1:35 p.m. ET). "Home plate umpire Jansen Visconti is averaging 8.1 walks per game in 15 games so far this season. That is the second-most in Major League Baseball with home plate umpires," Mike says. "One thing that we know about (Boston's) Chris Sale in his past - if he is getting squeezed at the plate and he is walking hitters, we typically see the three-, four-, five-run inning that absolutely derails his day pretty frequently. I think we see that here today."

Roberts, follows with a pair of plays. The first is the Mets (-130) to defeat the Cubs and complete a four-game sweep (2:20 p.m. ET). "The Cubs have lost nine straight, and it's looking tougher and tougher for them every day. They're as bad as their record," he says. "(New York's) David Peterson's been pretty decent, three runs or less in each of his last five starts. The Mets have won four straight. The thing I like about the Mets is their confidence boost after they took two of three from the Braves."

Micah's second play is the Mariners (-125) to beat the Rangers and complete their own four-game sweep (2:35 p.m. ET). "The Mariners, 13 straight wins, the Rangers have lost three straight," he says. "(Seattle's) Chris Flexen has come on strong. They've won his last four starts, and his last two have been his absolute best of the season, allowing only one earned run. … (Texas') Glenn Otto lost his last four, 15 earned runs (allowed) between those four starts. I think they hit him again."

Bollman wraps things up with two plays of his own. The first is the Giants (-145) to defeat the Brewers in the finale of their four-game series (4:05 p.m. ET). "The Brewers have lost seven of their last 10 games, the Giants have won six of their last eight," he says. "Logan Webb is starting for the Giants. He has a 1.38 ERA in his last seven games. He's pitched six straight quality starts. The Giants were shut down a bit by Eric Lauer, the lefty, yesterday. But they're still the fifth-best team in weighted on-base average against lefties in the past 30 days."

John's second play is Pete Alonso (+200) to win the Home Run Derby on Monday (8 p.m. ET). "Alonso has now won two straight Home Run Derbies. He's looking to be the first person to win three overall since Ken Griffey Jr. and the first person ever to win three straight," he says. "He has the same pitcher from the last two years pitching to him. He's been competing in Home Run Derbies his entire life, he knows exactly what to expect and he knows exactly how to pace himself."
