Today's picks: Why the Brewers will beat the Braves, plus more MLB and NBA for Sunday, May 8
The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Sunday, May 8, on The Early Edge podcast
Jonathan Coachman is joined by expert sports bettors Micah Roberts, Alex Selesnick and Larry Hartstein on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for the MLB and NBA for Sunday, May 8.
Coach starts things off with three SportsLine Plays of the Day. The first is in the NBA: The Suns (-140) to beat the Mavericks in Game 4 of their Western Conference semifinal series (3:30 p.m. ET). "The Mavericks had their one bite at the apple, and they got it done," he says. "But not this time. The Suns will not shoot that bad. They will not not get the ball to Chris Paul and Devin Booker."
The next play also is in the NBA: The Heat (+2) to cover against 76ers in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series (8 p.m. ET). "The Sixers had their big moment," Coach says. "They had their Joel Embiid moment. We get back to normal."
The final SportsLine Play of the Day is in Major League Baseball: The Pirates (+105) to beat the Reds in the rubber match of their three-game series (1:40 p.m. ET). "The Reds are the worst team in the history of baseball," Coach says. "And the Pirates are are 75 percent straight up on Sundays this season."
Roberts is up next with a pair of MLB plays. The first is the Brewers (+120) to beat the Braves in the rubber match of their three-game set (1:35 p.m. ET). "The Brewers haven't lost two straight in three weeks," he says. "They've gone 15-4, playing with lots of confidence right now. They've won all six of Aaron Ashby's starts over two years. He's only had two starts this year, and they've won them both. Get four to five innings, get that bullpen in there and close the game out. That's been the Brewers' strategy most of the season so far."
Micah's second play is Over 8 runs (-115) in the Pirates-Reds contest. "In the last six games, (the Reds) have gone Over the total," he says. "They're hitting the ball well, but the bullpen is awful. That is a perfect recipe for an Over. And (Pittsburgh's) Zach Thompson has been horrendous - 19 runs over his last three starts."
Selesnick follows with an NBA parlay. He likes Over 30.5 points + rebounds + assists (-118) for Phoenix's Chris Paul in the Suns-Mavericks game. "Paul has been sensational in the playoffs," Alex says. "He's cleared this in six of nine postseason games. He's eclipsed this total in 13 of his previous 18 playoff games. This is one of the rare players in the NBA that really elevates his play come the postseason. Also, he is coming off of a dud on Friday. There is no player that I trust more to bounce back."
Coach jumps in with an MLB play. He likes Over 7 runs (-108) in the Dodgers-Cubs game (7 p.m. ET). "I know (Walker) Buehler's on the mound. I know he was dynamic in his last start," he says. "But Sunday night games have a different feel. Sunday night in Chicago, runs are going to be scored."
Hartstein wraps things up with an MLB play of his own: The Red Sox (-157) to beat the White Sox in the finale of their three-game series (11:35 a.m. ET). "(The Red Sox have) lost four in a row, they've scored three runs in their last three games," Larry says. "The White Sox have won five in a row. Why are the Red Sox favored? It has to do with Dallas Keuchel being not completely washed up, but on the way there. At 34 years old, the WHIP at 2.3, more walks than strikeouts."
