Today's picks: Why the Astros will beat the Angels, plus more MLB, NBA, NHL and soccer for Monday, April 18

The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Monday, April 18, on The Early Edge podcast

Jonathan Coachman is joined by expert sports bettors John Bollman, Allie O'Neill and Alex Selesnick on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for Major League Baseball, the NBA, the NHL and soccer for Monday, April 18.

Coach starts things off with three SportsLine Plays of the Day. The first, courtesy of Jon "Buckets" Eimer, is in soccer: Over 2.5 corners (-160) for Cadiz against Barcelona in their La Liga match (3 p.m. ET). "Buckets says they have to be aggressive," Coach says. "They need to have a game where they're pressing forward. So the corners are going to be significant."

The second SportsLine Play of the Day is the 76ers (-7) to cover against the Raptors in Game 2 of their first-round NBA Playoff series (7:30 p.m. ET). "They looked phenomenal in Game 1," Coach says. "We believe they'll do it again in Game 2." The third and final play is in the NHL: The Canucks (-105) to beat the Stars (10:30 p.m. ET).

O'Neill is up next with an MLB play. She likes the Guardians to win the first five innings (-115) against the White Sox (6:10 p.m. ET). "I think Cleveland has the edge here with Shane Bieber," Allie says. "He made four starts versus the White Sox last season and he pitched really well in all of them. They did end up winning all of those first five innings except for one, which wasn't really his fault because he was taken out due to injury or some other reason in the third."

Bollman follows with an MLB play of his own. He likes the Astros (-160) to beat the Angels (8:10 p.m. ET). "The Angels should probably be without Mike Trout (hand). His X-rays were negative, but he still should be out of the lineup," John says. "(Houston's) Luis Garcia only allowed two hits in four innings pitched in his first start and he was also much better at home last season. … The Astros were 7-3 at home against the Angels last season and they're 16-7 against them in their last 23 games overall."

Coach jumps back in with an NBA play. He likes Over 206 in Game 2 of the Jazz-Mavericks first-round playoff series (8:30 p.m. ET). "The Mavericks play faster when Luka (Doncic) is not in the lineup," he says. "The Jazz can score and the Mavs will get it going, and they will sail to the Over.

Selesnick wraps things up with an MLB prop play. He likes Over 4.5 strikeouts for San Francisco's Alex Cobb in the Giants-Mets game (7:10 p.m. ET). "Cobb looked fantastic in his first outing of the season against the Padres. He struck out five of the first six batters he faced, fanned 10 people in the game in just five innings," Alex says. "(He's) facing a Mets team that ranks 23rd in strikeout percentage. However, I do think they haven't faced very many quality pitchers this season, so those stats are somewhat skewed, in my opinion. We know Citi Field is one of the least hitter-friendly ballparks as well."
