Today's picks: Why Houston will cover against Illinois, plus more college basketball for Sunday, March 20
The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Sunday, March 20, on The Early Edge podcast
Jonathan Coachman is joined by expert sports bettors Mike McClure and Calvin Wetzel on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for the college basketball for Sunday, March 20.
Coach starts things off with two SportsLine Plays of the Day in the NCAA Tournament, both from expert Max Gorenstein. The first is Wisconsin (-4.5) to cover against Iowa State in the second round of the Midwest Region (6:10 p.m. ET). "Yes, Iowa State played very good the other night. They were in control the entire game," Coach says. "But this is basically a home game for the Badgers (in Milwaukee). Wisconsin won by seven in their opening-round game against Colgate and they're only laying 4.5 here. I think the Cyclones' magic runs out, and so does Mad Max."
The second Play of the Day is Texas (+140) to defeat Purdue in the second round of the East Region (8:40 p.m. ET). "This is about fading the Boilermakers," Coach says. "Yes, they have a good team. Yes, they have a lot of good players. But bad shooting in pressure situations. Texas showed on Friday that they have what it takes."
McClure is up next with an NCAA Tournament play. He likes Houston (-3.5) to cover against Illinois in the second round of the South Region (12:10 p.m. ET on CBS). "I have not been impressed with the Illinois team," Mike says. "I do respect their ability to turn it on at any given time because of the matchup problems they can create with Kofi Cockburn here. However, I like the defensive efficiency on the Houston side. I think they're an incredibly well-coached team. They really hang their hat on the defensive end."
Wetzel wraps things up with a play in the NCAA Women's Tournament. He likes Stanford (-18.5) to cover against Kansas in the second round of the Spokane Region (9 p.m. ET). "I don't like the matchup for Kansas in this one," Calvin says. "They play up-tempo, which allows the favorite to pull away a little bit more. Kansas really doesn't guard the arc very well, which isn't going to help against a Stanford team that loves to knock down the 3-ball."
