Report: Big Ten and Pac-12 will postpone football seasons Tuesday, but SEC wants to play in fall

It's possible that 2-3 Power Five conferences could play college football this fall.

Dan Patrick said on his national radio show Monday morning that the Big Ten and Pac-12 will postpone their football seasons as soon as Tuesday with the hopes of playing in the spring. That's not all that newsworthy. What was, however, was Patrick reporting that the SEC plans to try and play this fall and is hoping to "recruit" the ACC and Big 12 to join it – those two leagues are "on the fence" about football this fall – in a type of super conference.

The Big Ten and Pac-12 are essentially joined at the hip in making their decisions. Big Ten schools recently voted 12-2 against playing this fall, with Nebraska and Iowa the dissenters. Reportedly, Oklahoma and Texas from the Big 12 – and those are the two most powerful programs in the conference by far -- are pushing to have a fall season, and it's not out of the question they could go their own route with the SEC. Or the Big 12 will simply do what OU and UT want because the league frankly has no choice.

Bleacher Report's Matt Hayes tweeted this: Power 5 AD just texted me: "It's looking more and more like it's Big Ten and Pac-12 vs. SEC, ACC and Big 12."

How would the bowl schedule work in his model without potentially two Power Five leagues playing? Would there still be a College Football Playoff? Would there be a Heisman Trophy given out? So many questions.

Several top players such as Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields and Clemson signal-caller Trevor Lawrence, the two Heisman Trophy betting favorites at William Hill sportsbook, are part of a Twitter movement of #WeWantToPlay hoping for a fall season. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yuracheck has tweeted his support for it.

"We are more likely to get the virus in everyday life than playing football. Having a season also incentivizes players being safe and taking all of the right precautions to try to avoid contracting covid because the season/ teammates safety is on the line. Without the season, as we've seen already, people will not social distance or wear masks and take the proper precautions," was part of Lawrence's tweet.

If there is no fall season whatsoever, the NFL is expected to shift a couple of games per week to Saturday to fill the void.
