NFL Week 6 lookahead lines, picks: Why there's value on Cowboys-Patriots right now and more from proven NFL expert

My first rule of thumb on NFL lookahead predictions: Check out underdogs receiving 3.5 points.

One such team that fit the category last week jumped off the laptop screen: unbeaten Buffalo at Kansas City. At the time, the Chiefs were 1-2 straight-up with lineups that included more new faces than a typical Super Bowl runner-up. The Bills stood 3-0, with their latest two victories by a combined 57 points.

Not saying the Bills were a steal, but if you place trust in this bunch, the time to wager was then. Sure enough, after Buffalo recorded its second shutout in four outings and with a plus-97 points differential in its past three, the line was adjusted to Chiefs -2.5. The extra point could come in handy against the Chiefs, whose initial three games this season went down to the wire. For now, the rule of thumb has produced a thumbs-up pick.

One of this week's selections is Buffalo-Kansas City in reverse, meaning a favorite by 2.5 points. It concludes the trio. Leading off is one of four games that carry a spread of three, any of which could tilt either way off the key lookahead number.
