Bettors who seized Seattle at plus-3.5 against San Francisco on the lookahead line, as recommended in this space a week ago, were greeted by a reassuring sight when this week's spreads were released. The new number was 2.5.

None of which assures that the Seahawks will cover, but there is a mountain of difference between 2.5 and 3.5 given that three is the most common margin of victory -- about 15 percent of all games. In Week 2, four of the 16 matchups wound up as three-point decisions.

Oddly, the Seattle-San Fran spread shrunk even with the 'Hawks losing. (So did the 49ers.) Movement might be driven by unapparent reasons. Still, if an underdog of 3.5 or even four holds some appeal in the lookaheads, the time to act might be now instead of waiting.
