NFL Week 10 lookahead lines, picks: The three games you should bet a week early from proven NFL expert

Sportsbooks release their first lines for a given week 10-12 days out, and Mike Tierney shares how you can take advantage.

For the Week 8 lookahead picks, we focused on games with spreads of a field goal or a half-point away. The thinking was, if a team were attractive, we would lock down a favorite before the line might move to 3.5 or up, or an underdog prior to any shrinkage to 2.5 or less.

Sure enough, shifts happened. One spread changed by a point, another by two. The third, owing to extreme circumstances, changed by a whopping seven. A glance at each:

Jacksonville began at +3 versus Seattle. Even though the Seahawks had Geno Smith instead of the invaluable Russell Wilson at QB, the line drifted to four, perhaps with bettors asking, "What a minute, the crummy Jaguars are only being spotted three?" Seattle covered with ease by 20.

When Pittsburgh similarly opened at +3 against Cleveland, the Browns' injury situation was murky. By game time, with QB Baker Mayfield and WRs Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. all cleared to play, the Browns stood as five-point picks. Didn't matter. The Steelers won outright as the losing side managed 10 points with its often terrific trio.

Dak Prescott's ailing calf was getting little attention during the lookahead window largely because of Dallas' bye week. The Cowboys eventually went from -2.5 against Minnesota to plus territory as doubts built up about his availability. When he was ruled out an hour prior to kickoff, the Vikings were a 4.5-point pick. Much of the public took a bath as the 'Boys won outright, covering by 8.5.

Another week, another foggy outlook for a number of QBs as injuries cloud our handicapping. The lead-off look-ahead pick addresses a prominent pair.
