Of all the popular vernacular pertaining to Fantasy football relevance, the term "breakout" can be the most difficult to define. So, before we offer any such breakout candidates for the 2026 season, we'll attempt to do just that.
Our definition of a Fantasy football breakout involves players who have already flashed both talent and some level of Fantasy football relevance but appear bound to break through their previous career ceilings. Although there is some overlap with the category of sleepers, the main difference is that a breakout can come from an early-round draft pick if one believes he's bound to outperform his average draft position, or ADP.
As a side note, there is an ever-raging debate among Fantasy analysis on whether rookies could or should be included in the category of breakouts. If you've followed our content in this space, you're aware we believe the answer is a firm no. It makes logical sense to us that in order to break out, a player must first break "in" to the NFL and show his wares. What's more, we believe analysts who take the other side of this argument are, in large part, just taking an easy way out from attacking a difficult category.
