From an analytical standpoint, the 2022 rookie wide receiver class is one of the most intriguing that we have had in quite some time. The first receiver selected in the NFL Draft, Drake London, performed below the CFB average efficiency during his first two seasons and then erupted for one of the strongest single-season performances in recent memory in Year 3. Similarly, Jameson Williams couldn't even find playing time behind Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave at Ohio State but then outshined both in 2021 after transferring to Alabama.
To add further volatility to Williams' range of outcomes, Detroit's first-round selection is recovering from a torn ACL and might not be ready to go to start the season. This is another common theme among the 2022 class -- John Metchie, George Pickens, and Justyn Ross also are recovering from debilitating injuries.
To try to make some sense of the strange 2022 WR class, I dug into the advanced underlying data for the top-20 prospects. I researched each player's route-specific data to see which receivers ran an NFL-ready route tree at the CFB level and how they performed on those routes -- you can find all of that information here. I also examined how each receiver performed when running routes and drawing targets at different levels of the field -- read about which players stand out as the best short, intermediate, and deep threats from the 2022 class here.
At this point, I feel as confident as I can in my understanding of and expectations for the 2022 WR class. To find my rankings (Dynasty and season-long) and analysis on the top-20 rookie receivers, read on.
