Which over/under win total side has taken the heaviest betting action at Caesars Sportsbook for the upcoming college football season? Not a national powerhouse like Alabama or Ohio State, but Mountain West school Air Force. The Falcons opened with a total of 7.5 but have taken so much money on the Over that the number is now 8.5 – Coach Troy Calhoun's team finished 10-3 last year (8-4-1 against the spread).
Six schools are projected by oddsmakers to be betting favorites in every regular-season game: Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Utah -- all Power 5 programs -- are among them. Air Force is the sixth. The Falcons host Northern Iowa, Colorado and Navy as part of their out-of-conference schedule and play Army at a neutral site at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. In conference, Boise State visits Falcon Stadium, and AFA closes the regular season at San Diego State and certainly could be an underdog there.
Boise is the +200 favorite to win the Mountain West followed by Fresno State (+250) and AFA (+450). Last year, Air Force's losses were by four at home to Utah State, by six at home to San Diego State, and by a touchdown in overtime against Army at AT&T Stadium.
Calhoun brings back starting quarterback Haaziq Daniels, leading rusher Brad Roberts, four fifths of the offensive line, and eight defensive starters.
Air Force doesn't throw the ball much in their option offense, and Daniels was 52-for-104 passing last year for 1,184 yards (leading nation in yards per completion at 22.8), seven touchdowns and three picks in 12 games. He was second on team in rushing with 731 yards and in rushing touchdowns with 11. Daniels set school records for the longest run (94 yards) and pass play (92 vs. Colorado State) in 2021, making him the only FBS player to currently hold both such records for a school.
Roberts rushed for 1,352 yards, third-most in school history, on a school-record 298 carries, which were the second-most in the nation, and added 13 TDs. He became the first Falcons running back named first-team All-Mountain West since Chad Hall in 2007. AFA led the nation in rushing by a mile at 341.4 yards per game.
On defense, linebacker Vince Sanford is back after leading the team 17 tackles for loss in 2021 while adding 9.5 sacks. He was named second-team All-Mountain West. Safety Trey Taylor also returns after finishing with a team-leading 62 tackles. The defense has a new coordinator in Brian Knorr, who replaces John Rudzinski – he took the same position at Virginia in January. Air Force had the nation's No. 7 rush defense (94.8 ypg) and No. 13 scoring defense (19.1 ppg) in 2021.
