Advanced model updates Giants' projected win total
The SportsLine Projection Model has updated its projected win totals after the 2020 NFL Draft.
The New York Giants are coming off a disappointing four-win season in 2019 that led to the end of the Pat Shurmur era, but the franchise is hopeful about building around new franchise quarterback Daniel Jones and star running back Saquon Barkley. And after spending aggressively in NFL free agency and making 10 selections in the 2020 NFL Draft, the franchise hopes to turn things around quickly under new head coach Joe Judge.
The Giants made a couple of big defensive signings by giving cornerback James Bradberry a three-year, $43.5 million contract and then landing linebacker Blake Martinez on a three-year, $30 million deal. They also supplemented those signings with several smaller deals for important role players like Kyler Fackrell, Cameron Fleming and Colt McCoy before entering the 2020 NFL Draft with a lot of capital.

In an unprecedented draft that went off surprisingly without many hitches, the Giants made one of the most shocking moves of Day One by selecting Georgia offensive tackle Andrew Thomas with the No. 4 overall pick. And while many would argue that there were better tackles available at that spot, there's simply no questioning that offensive line was New York's biggest need.
New York would also go on to add offensive tackle Matt Peart and guard Shane Lemieux in the first five rounds to add building blocks up front and then spent their remaining seven picks on the defensive side of the ball. Former Alabama safety Xavier McKinney looked like a potential first-round pick and was a pleasant surprise for general manager Dave Gettleman when they went on the clock at No. 36 and he's got the potential to make a significant impact early.
However, there's no doubt that the Giants still have roster holes as they head towards the 2020 NFL season. In one of the deepest wide receiver classes in history, the Giants failed to add playmaking help for Jones and that certainly stands out as a mistake in a draft where the Giants otherwise did a good job addressing needs. But just how much progress did the Giants make after managing just 12 wins the past three seasons?
The SportsLine Projection Model predicts that the Giants win an average of 6.0 games in the computer's 10,000 simulations of the 2020 NFL season, unmoved from 6.0 projected wins prior to the 2020 NFL Draft. New York wins the division 4.1 percent of the time and makes the playoffs 10.4 percent of the time. The Giants are currently 60-1 to Win Super Bowl 55 according to William Hill, which is tied for eighth-worst odds in the NFL.
