2026 Fantasy Football running back rankings: Christian McCaffrey doesn't crack top tier after monster season

With modern football largely eliminating workhorse running backs -- 16 players had 18 rush attempts per game 20 years ago compared to just nine such players 10 years ago and only four last year -- it makes the players who do see a significant amount of touches at the running back position all the more valuable in Fantasy. Christian McCaffrey led all running backs in both touches and Fantasy points by a wide margin in PPR leagues, after all.

But there's also something to be said about efficiency on touches and the ability to stack touchdowns. While Bijan Robinson saw 47 fewer touches than McCaffrey, he gained 172 more yards than the 49ers back while scoring just 11 touchdowns helped to tamp down his overall numbers. On the other end of the spectrum, Jahmyr Gibbs scored 18 touchdowns to 17 for McCaffrey, but the Lions back touched the ball 97 fewer times.

With concerns about McCaffrey's age and how he performs following such a high-volume season, Robinson and Gibbs find themselves on top of most expert running back rankings for 2026.
