2024 Big 12 futures odds: Conference winner picks, top longshots, win total best bets and more to know
Goodbye, Texas and Oklahoma. Hello, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.
Yes, after two final, awkward years together while lawyers were negotiating the exit terms, the divorce between the Longhornsooners and the Big 12 is finally official. Texas and Oklahoma have moved on to a more lucrative partner in the SEC, leaving the rest of the Big 12 fighting for survival.
Give the conference credit. It very well could've gone the way of the Pac-12 and disappeared forever. Instead it acted quickly, adding BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF prior to the 2023 season and Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah prior to this season, meaning an Orlando, Fla., to Salt Lake City, Utah, road trip for a conference game is now a thing.
But while the Big 12 -- or is it the Medium 16? -- has quantity, quality is another matter. The Longhorns and Sooners combined for 18 of the 30 conference titles since the Big 12's inception in 1996. They also accounted for both of the conference's national championships in football and five of the Big 12's seven Heisman Trophy winners. And don't even get us started on television revenue generation.
However, Texas and Oklahoma's exit leaves the opportunity for some team to become the Big 12's new big fish. The media covering the conference believe that team this season will be newcomer Utah. The Utes, who went 8-5 in the Pac-12 last season, received 20 of 61 first-place votes. They edged out Big 12 holdover Kansas State, which received 19 first-place votes. Oklahoma State came in third with 14.
