2023 Fortinet Championship odds, predictions: Picks and best bets for this week's PGA Tour event from a golf expert

CBS Sports golf writer Patrick McDonald, who is 8-1 with his last nine head-to-head matchup picks, has broken down the 2023 Fortinet Championship field and locked in his predictions and best bets for the first event of the 2023 FedEx Cup Fall season

The 2023 FedEx Cup Fall season makes its debut when play begins in the 2023 Fortinet Championship beginning Thursday at the Silverado Resort in Napa, Calif. The seven-event fall season offers players who ranked No. 51 and higher in last season's FedExCup standings a chance to continue to earn FedExCup points and improve their chances of playing in the biggest events next year. For this week, Max Homa is the favorite in the latest Fortinet Championship odds, at +750. Justin Thomas (+1400), Sahith Theegala (+1800), Stephan Jaeger (+2000) and Cam Davis (+2500) round out the top five choices in the Fortinet Championship field.

Before locking in any Fortinet Championship picks, make sure you see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from CBS Sports golf writer Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour. Since July, McDonald has gone 11-6-1 with his head-to-head picks, including an 8-1 record over the last three weeks of last season. He also nailed Russell Henley to be the first round leader in the Wyndham Championship, at 40-1 odds.

Now, McDonald has been digging into the 2023 Fortinet Championship field to find the best value and just locked in his best bets and favorites to avoid.

One surprise: McDonald is completely fading Max Homa even though he is the +750 favorite. Homa is attempting to win the Fortinet Championship for the third straight year, and no player has won the same PGA Tour event three years in a row since Steve Stricker won John Deere Classic in 2009-11.

Moreover, McDonald is jumping on several underdogs, including one longshot who's priced at more than 60-1. This player "has had prior success at this golf course" and is a longshot who could surprise. If he does, you could cash in HUGE. You need to see who it is before locking in any 2023 Fortinet Championship picks of your own.

So which 2023 Fortinet Championship players should you target or avoid? And which player could bring a big payday at more than 60-1? ... Join SportsLine right now to see Patrick McDonald's top picks for the 2023 Fortinet Championship, all from the expert who is 8-1 with his last nine head-to-head picks and nailed Russell Henley to be the first round leader in the Wyndham Championship, at 40-1 odds.
