2022 Beijing Winter Games odds: Best bets and picks for alpine skiing, biathlon and more from Olympics expert

Olympics expert Mike Tierney cashed big on the 2016 and 2020 Summer Games and 2018 Winter Games, and he has three best bets in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and biathlon in Beijing

ByUpdated: Feb 07, 2022 3:43PM UTC . 4 min read

Norway's Johannes Thingnes Boe attempts to defend his gold medal when he participates in the men's 20-kilometer individual biathlon competition on Tuesday at the National Biathlon Center in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Thingnes Boe, who also was a member of the Norwegian team that won gold in the mixed relay on Saturday, finished first in this event in the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.

Thingnes Boe is a co-favorite at +333 in the men's 20-kilometer individual odds. Fellow Norwegian Sturla Holm Laegreid and Quentin Fillon Maillet of France also are listed at +333. The event begins at 3:30 a.m. ET.

Before locking in any Beijing Olympics 2022 picks or predictions, you need to see what SportsLine's Olympics expert, Mike Tierney, has to say. (Head over to SportsLine's 2022 Olympics page for more analysis and updates.)

A national sportswriter whose work appears in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Tierney has covered nine Olympic Games in person. For Rio in 2016, Tierney profited big-time. He told readers to bet Over on Team USA's gold medal count (41.5) and Over on Team USA's overall medal count (102.5). The result? 46 golds, 121 medals and two easy cashes.

For the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Tierney hit two of his three predictions: Germany (+200) to win the most gold medals and the United States winning Under 10.5 gold medals (+110). And at last year's Tokyo Games, he correctly predicted the United States would go Over 111.5 total medals (-110).

Now, Tierney has analyzed Monday and Tuesday's action and identified three best bets. We can tell you that he is picking Thingnes Boe (+333) to win his second straight gold in the men's biathlon 20-kilometer individual. "Boe's defense of his title was threatened when he had to quarantine after a close COVID-19 contact, but he emerged from it in optimum health," Tierney says.

Tierney also has picks in alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. One of these picks is a long shot that Tierney says "is poised to take a step up." You ABSOLUTELY need to see what he has to say before locking in your picks.

Tierney's picks and analysis:

Biathlon, men's 20-kilometer individual (3:30 a.m. ET Tuesday)
Johannes Thingnes Boe, Norway (+330)

How rare to see tri-favorites in an Olympic event. Boe shares the status with Quentin Fillon Maillet of France and Sturla Holm Laegreid of Norway. What gives Boe the edge is recency. His surge past Maillet in the 24-kilometer mixed relay on Saturday gave Norway, which appeared out of contention during the race, the gold medal. Boe's defense of his title was threatened when he had to quarantine after a close COVID-19 contact, but he emerged from it in optimum health. The third-most decorated biathlete ever is not to be confused with his brother Tarjei, who also is a medal threat.

Odds: Caesars

Alpine skiing, men's Super-G (10 p.m. ET Monday)
Vincent Kriechmayr, Austria (+600)

It's not often you can snare the defending world champion in an event at these enticing odds. Admittedly, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway (+175) skipped that event with an injury, but still. Favorite Marco Odermatt of Switzerland (+150) is regarded as a superstar down the road but might not be advanced enough to reach the top of the podium. Kriechmayr also took the downhill title at the worlds last year, an indication that can follow his downhill performance in Beijing with a smashing Super-G effort.

Odds: Caesars

Cross-country skiing, women's sprint freestyle (3 a.m. ET Tuesday)
Anamarija Lampic, Slovenia (+700)

Going for value here. Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist of Sweden share favoritism at a low +150. Lampic, a notch behind on accomplishments, trails the pair substantially on the odds board. She reeled in bronze medals in the individual and team sprint at the World Championships a year ago and is poised to take a step up. Team USA devotees might want to consider Jessie Diggins at +1200.

Odds: Caesars
