2021 Wimbledon tennis odds: World No. 5 Dominic Thiem out of grass-court major due to wrist injury; draw is Friday
The men's side of the 2021 Wimbledon field has lost another contender in Dominic Thiem.
The men's side of the 2021 Wimbledon tennis field continues to thin out in terms of contenders. About a week ago, two-time champion and world No. 3 Rafael Nadal pulled out of the upcoming grass-court major championship and now world No. 5 Dominic Thiem has withdrawn due to a wrist injury. He had been +3000 on the William Hill Sportsbook tennis odds to win his first major.
Thiem, from Austria, was the second seed at this week's Mallorca Championships tournament but injured the wrist Tuesday against Adrian Mannarino and was forced to retire. Thiem went to Barcelona to see a specialist and apparently it wasn't good news as Thiem will be out for around five weeks at least, which obviously could put his U.S. Open status in jeopardy – Thiem is the defending champion there. He is dealing with "a detachment of the posterior sheath of the ulnar side of the right wrist."
Thiem had been seeded fourth for Wimbledon but had lost in the first round his past two trips to the All England Club; there was no tournament last year. Thiem also was knocked out in the first round of this year's French Open. He previously had said he wasn't playing in the Tokyo Olympics; neither is Nadal.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is the -110 favorite at William Hill to win his third straight Wimbledon title and sixth overall. If he does, that would be 20 Grand Slam titles, which would tie Nadal and Roger Federer for the most all-time. Djokovic is of course the No. 1 seed and won the Australian Open and French Open already this year. The 34-year-old could become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the calendar-year Grand Slam.
The Wimbledon draw is Friday; eight-time champion Roger Federer had been seeded seventh but presumably will move up to No. 6 with Thiem out. Federer could land in the same side of the draw as Djokovic, who beat Federer in an epic five-set final last year.
Russian Daniil Medvedev will for sure be on the opposite side of the draw from Djokovic as the No. 2 seed. Medvedev is +600 to win Wimbledon for the first time along with No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas. Medvedev hasn't been past the third round of this tournament and lost to Djokovic in the final of the 2021 Australian Open. The Greek Tsitsipas lost in the final of this year's French to Djokovic and hasn't advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Other key players missing from the tournament, which starts Monday, will be 2016 Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic, two-time quarterfinalist Stan Wawrinka and women's world No. 2 Naomi Osaka.
