2021 PGA Championship golf odds: Rory McIlroy opens as betting favorite, won 2012 PGA also at Kiawah Island

The 2021 PGA Championship tees off Thursday from Kiawah Island in South Carolina, and Rory McIlroy has opened as the betting favorite.

The 2021 PGA Championship is held this week Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Ocean Course in South Carolina. The last time that track hosted a major was the 2012 PGA Championship. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy won it then and has opened as the +1100 favorite this year on the William Hill Sportsbook golf odds. The course is set to play around 7,875 yards (par 72), making it the longest major championship venue ever.

Nine years ago at Kiawah Island, McIlroy lapped the field by finishing 13-under 275 and eight shots ahead (PGA Championship record) of second-place David Lynn. The course had been softened by rains back then and is not expected to play near that easy this week. The May date (as opposed to August in 2012) should presenting much firmer and windier conditions than nine years ago. McIlroy does tend to thrive on Pete Dye-designed courses like Kiawah Island.

McIlroy, ranked seventh in the world, looks to join an exclusive club of players to win the PGA Championship three times – he also won it in 2014 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. Rory enters off a win at the at Quail Hollow two weeks ago and skipped the Byron Nelson in Texas this past weekend.

Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm are each +1400. Thomas won the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. Rahm is looking for his first major title. Jordan Spieth and Bryson DeChambeau are +1600 and world No. 1 Dustin Johnson +1800.

A Spieth victory would give him the prestigious career Grand Slam. DeChambeau could have an edge on this monster course with his length off the tee. Six holes will play over 500 yards. Johnson, who grew up in South Carolina, was supposed to play the Byron Nelson over the weekend but withdrew with a minor injury. There's no indication he will not play this week. Johnson has not won the PGA Championship but has been a runner-up the past two years.

On the William Hill double-chance prop, McIlroy or DeChambeau winning is yes-only at +600 and so is Rory/Rahm, Rory/Thomas and Rory/Spieth.

Defending champion Collin Morikawa is +3000. One doesn't have to look far for the last repeat champion: Brooks Koepka in 2019. He's +3300 off a missed cut at the Byron Nelson. The last spot in the 156-player field went to K.H. Lee after he won Sunday at the Byron Nelson, his first career PGA Tour victory. He's +12500.

William Hill Sportsbook PGA Championship favorites

  • Rory McIlroy +1100
  • Justin Thomas +1400
  • Jon Rahm +1400
  • Jordan Spieth +1600
  • Bryson DeChambeau +1600
  • Dustin Johnson +1800
