Belmont Stakes runner-up Hot Rod Charlie will try to win his first Grade 1 race when he leaves the starting gate in the 2021 Pennsylvania Derby on Saturday. He has two wins, two seconds and three thirds in 10 career starts and is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the 2021 Pennsylvania Derby odds. Preakness Stakes runner-up Midnight Bourbon is getting 5-1 odds in the Pennsylvania Derby 2021 field.

Weir knows this year's Pennsylvania Derby originally attracted a 10-horse field featuring Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, who failed a postrace drug test after winning the Run for the Roses. But the Bob Baffert-trained horse was scratched from Saturday's race; Baffert said that he did not like that Medina Spirit drew the No. 9 post.

The absence of Medina Spirit, who would've been the likely pacesetter, puts the pace scenario of Saturday's race in question. Without Medina Spirit, the early leader could be Weyburn, Hot Rod Charlie or Midnight Bourbon. Midnight Bourbon is coming off his fastest career race, the Travers Stakes, in which he was left alone on an early lead.

Now, Weir has handicapped the Pennsylvania Derby 2021 field, made his picks and constructed his bets.

One surprise: Weir is high on Weyburn, even though he is a 12-1 long shot. "Weyburn could get brave on the lead if Hot Rod Charlie and Midnight Bourbon get into a stalking position and are more concerned with each other than the leader," Weir told SportsLine.
