2020 Super Bowl 49ers vs. Chiefs: Nick Bosa winning MVP would be bad for books

If 49ers rookie defensive end Nick Bosa wins Super Bowl MVP, sportsbooks are going to take a bath.

The San Francisco 49ers likely aren't in Super Bowl LIV against the Kansas City Chiefs if they didn't select Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Bosa has transformed that defense into one of the league's best, and NFL bettors are all over him to win Super Bowl MVP honors Sunday.

Bosa's ability to rush the passer helped allow the 49ers to get constant pressure on the quarterback this season just with their front four and not having to blitz. San Francisco tied for fifth in the regular season with 48 sacks. Bosa had nine of them and should win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Bosa has three sacks in the two playoff games plus a pass defensed.

William Hill sportsbook is more exposed on Bosa to win Super Bowl MVP than any other game prop as of this writing. He opened at +4000 but is down to +2500 on the NFL odds because 20 percent of all bets to win Super Bowl MVP are on Bosa and 19 percent of all money. Bosa winning MVP has sold more tickets than any other single prop. San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is right behind at 18 percent of all MVP money wagered, but that's not close to the same liability with Jimmy G priced just +250.

It's more of the same at PointsBet sportsbook. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is taking the most action at 18 percent, but the book isn't exposed there because Mahomes is even money. Bosa is next on the list at 15 percent and is priced +3000. Just do the math.

Interesting that bettors are hammering Bosa so much because a defensive lineman has won MVP honors in only two Super Bowls: XII (Cowboys' Harvey Martin and Randy White shared) and XX (Bears' Richard Dent). PointsBet offers any defensive player as the winner at +700. Quarterback is a heavy -303 favorite.
