2020 NFL Draft odds: Will LSU safety Grant Delpit be a first-round pick?

LSU safety Grant Delpit won the Thorpe Award in the 2019 college football season, but it might not be enough for him to be a first-round pick in April's draft or even the first safety selected.

The 2019 college football season was one for the ages for LSU as not only did the Tigers win the national championship, but Joe Burrow broke numerous NCAA records on the way to winning the Heisman Trophy. He's all but a lock to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Burrow wasn't the only Tiger to win a major award.

Among many William Hill sportsbook props for the draft is an Over-Under draft position of 31.5 for Burrow's teammate, safety Grant Delpit, the Thorpe Award winner. Of course, there are 32 selections in Round 1 so the site is essentially asking whether Delpit goes in the first round. Both Over and Under are priced at -110, meaning a $110 wager would return $100.

In 2019, Delpit became the third LSU player to ever win the Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back, joining Patrick Peterson (2010) and Morris Claiborne (2011) – they were both cornerbacks and would become Top 10 draft picks. Safeties, alas, are simply not valued as much as cornerbacks by NFL teams.

Delpit probably would have been a much higher pick had he been come out after a 2018 season when he was a unanimous All-American, won the Jack Tatum Award and was a finalist for the Nagurski Trophy and semifinalist for the Thorpe. He still had 65 tackles, 4.5 for loss, two sacks, two interceptions and seven pass breakups in 14 starts in 2019.

The Texas native measured 6-foot-2, 213 pounds at this year's NFL Combine but didn't participate in any drills. NFL.com gives him a grade of 6.30, which means "starter within first two seasons." The site compares him to Kenny Vaccaro, who was taken No. 15 overall in 2013 by the Saints and remains a high-level player with the Titans.

Delpit is priced +130 to be the first safety selected in the draft, second behind Alabama's Xavier McKinney (-188).

Here are where various CBS experts list Delpit going on their mock drafts: Ryan Wilson – not in first round; Chris Trapasso – not in first round; Pete Prisco – not in first round; Will Brinson – 23rd to Patriots; Josh Edwards – 31st to 49ers; RJ White – not in first round; Tom Fornelli – 31st to 49ers. ESPN's Mel Kiper does not have Delpit in Round 1, either.

    NFL pick: Over 31.5
