Bruce's Past Picks
The Blackhawks have only one win in seven but their form hasn't been all that bad, including Tuesday at Vegas when losing in a shootout vs. the Golden Knights. That result followed a gallant fightback for a 5-3 win over Anaheim and the latest reminder that nothing is wrong with the Chicago offense, which can always count upon Connor Bedard (three goals past two games) and Tyler Bertuzzi for goals. Meanwhile, lots of meh lately for the Kings, in fact losing five of seven as goal-scoring has once again hit a dry patch. Such as in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the visiting Caps, when another good effort in goal from Darcy Kuemper (22 saves on 24 shots) was in vain. Play Blackhawks on Money Line
The Flames' offense is back on the blink, just one goal across the past two games (losses to Carolina & Nashville). Hardly the best prep for a visit from Minnesota, whose defensive numbers are among the league's best in recent weeks and who enter the Saddledome having won eight of nine. Of their last nine wins since November 9, five of those have been shutouts, and GK Filip Gustavsson is off of a hot November in which Minnesota was 5-1-0 in his starts while he posted a solid 2.06 GAA and .923 saves. Kirill Kaprizov (17 goals) and Matt Boldy (15 goals) have been providing the firepower lately as the Wild hit Calgary very hot...something the struggling Flames definitely aren't. Play Wild on the ML.
If there's one team that doesn't mind playing on the road, it's the Rangers. In a way, an inside-out season for Mike Sullivan's troops, who are a sparkling 11-4-1 on their travels, so maybe it's good news that they're away at the Canadian Tire Center in Ottawa's outskirts tonight. Overall, New York has now won four of five, so perhaps things are stirring, with Artemi Panarin getting scoring help lately from the likes of Will Cuylle, Vincent Trocheck, Vladislav Gavrikov among those also pitching in during the recent uptick. Meanwhile, the Sens return home after almost three weeks away in a historically-tricky scheduling situation. Play Rangers on Money Line
Tricky bit of scheduling here for the Caps, in LA last night where they downed the Kings 3-1 behind another stellar night in goal from Logan Thompson. As it's now a back-to-back situation tonight, It's Charlie Lindgren (3.12 GAA, .886 saves) time in goal. Edge in the nets, then, to the surging Sharks and Yaroslav Askarov, expected in goal once again after recording yet another win on Monday vs. Utah after a stellar November in which he posted a 1.88 GAA and .947 saves on top of winning in eight of ten starts. Play Sharks on Money Line.
Connor Hellebuyck's absence seems to be hurting the Jets not only in the crease, but psychologically. Losing five of the last six, Winnipeg has been outscored 21-8 in those five defeats, and Eric Comrie is having his problems as the fill-in top goalie option, losing in four of his last five starts and pulled after 20 minutes and three goals allowed on Monday in Buffalo, as the Sabres were on their way to a 5-1 win. Admittedly, Montreal's form has been a bit erratic, and GK Jakub Dobes has been out of form lately, though must note he still possesses an 8-3-2 mark this season, and the Canadiens have been scoring ample goals (21 across the past six games). Play Canadiens on Money Line
Let's change our tack with the Rangers after supporting them too many times at MSG, always expecting a breakthrough earlier this season. Sunday's 4-1 home loss to Lightning, however, likely assured that Spike Lee won't hang around to watch some hockey after the next Knicks home game; the Rangers are now 2-8-1 as a host this season. In those eight regulation defeats, only three goals have been scored, and even Mike Sullivan is sounding disgusted with proceedings. With top defender Adam Fox perhaps out, it gets harder as a hot Dallas hits Manhattan having won four straight while scoring 21 goals in the process, and Wyatt Johnston off of a hat-trick in the 6-1 win vs. the Senators on Sunday. Play Stars on Money Line
Despite an extended run of good results, the Sharks continue to be undervalued. It's wins in six of seven and eight of ten at the SAP Center for San Jose, amid a brilliant November in goal from Yaroslav Askarov, who was 8-2-0 for the month with a 1.88 GAA and .947 saves. Others besides Macklin Celebrini are starting to score goals, too; fellow starlet Will Smith has three across the last two games. Meanwhile, the Mammoth's recent form has been less than stellar, losing three straight, seven of nine, and twelve of the last sixteen. Play Sharks on Money Line.
On the road for the Ducks, who have spent the last two weeks at home after losing their last three away prior and and scoring only four goals in the process. Now Anaheim is moving forward in the short-term minus GK Lukas Dostal (11-5-1 this season), with Petr Mrazek (3.69 GAA< .881 saves) now number one in the net, though worth noting the Ducks have lost in Mrazek's last three starts. The Blackhawks have been losing recent starts, too, five in a row, though they've been in every one of those games save the loss at Buffalo. Scoring has slowed in the recent downturn, though Spencer Knight (7-5-4, 2.47 GAA, .920 saves) gives Chicago an edge in goal. Play Blackhawks on Money Line
Not much scoring either way for these two lately and getting past six goals between them looks a big chore. For Vegas, the offense has been misfiring for over a month and reached critical stage last night in a 4-1 loss to the Canadiens. Among concerns are big offseason add and ex-Leaf Mitch Marner, now eleven games without a goal. As for the Sharks, it's 10-1 under the last eleven, and Alex Nedeljkovic in goal has been quite serviceable in November, with a 2.39 GAA and .920 saves this month. Play Sharks-VGK Under
Based on recent from and results, these teams look like ships passing by in the night. After some indifferent form in the first month of the season, Washington has won five of its last six and scored plenty of goals in the process (24 across the past four wins). Alex Ovechkin (11 goals already) can still do his thing but the hot scorer lately has been Jakob Chychrun, with five goals across the past four games. Meanwhile, we are beginning to think the window closed on the Leafs after last season, with FA losses (including Mitch Marner) lessening the firepower, and only two wins the last nine to put Craig Berube under the microscope. The Sharks get a mulligan for their Wednesday loss at Denver, as the Avs never lose. Back at the SAP Center this afternoon, however, the Sharks might like their chances a bit more after topping the Mammoth, Kings, and Bruins on their last homestand. The defense has been generally very good for San Jose, and Alex Nedeljkovic (likely in the nets this afternoon) has been solid in November, with a 2.39 GAA and .920 saves this month. As for Adam Foote's Canucks, their defense has been leaking, and today will reportedly give a look in goal to little-used Jiri Patera, who was shelled for seven goals by the Panthers in his only start on November 17. Play Sharks on Money Line
Florida has been a bit up-and-down but this is a spot where it has flourished this season. Of course, Paul Maurice isn't happy about the eleven games (out of 23) that his Panthers haven't won, but after the last seven of those losses, Florida has bounced back with a win, most recently on Monday night in Nashvllle when pumping in 8 goals. Sergei Bobrovsky likely back in the net to atone for the loss at Philly and in his previous start vs. Edmonton. Meanwhile, the brief Flames uprising the past week was halted on Wednesday at Tampa Bay, and Dustin Wolf (6-12-2; 3.17 GAA, .890 saves) has generally struggled (as has the rest of the team) in goal. Play Panthers on Spread
A long homestand continues for the Ducks, who have already beaten the Mammoth, Bruins, and Golden Knights in this stretch at the Honda Center. At home this season, it's general been pretty good for Anaheim, which has won eight of eleven chances as a host . There's a chance the other half of the Czech connection" in goal, Petr Mrazek, starts tonight, though Joel Quenneville might still opt for Lukas Dostal, who's won his last three starts. The Kings have won 9 of 14 on the road, but that mark wavered lately with recent loss at Washington and San Jose, and the offense looks sluggish, scoring just 8 goals in the last four games. Play Ducks on Money Line
A lot to like about the Avs, is doing the best imitation of posting shutouts since Don Drysdale fired a record six of them in a row for the Dodgers back in 1968. In NHL terms, three straight shutouts, as Colorado has pitched, roughly equates to Drysdale in May/June of '68. Across the last five games, just four goals allowed. Scott Wedgewood, with a 1.33 GAA and .948 saves in November, is likely in in goal this afternoon. Not to be outdone are the Wild, with three shutout wins their last six, and Jesper Wallstedt expected to be in net after recording all three of those shutouts within his last four starts! Jesper's GAA in five November starts...0.99!! Play Avs-Wild Under
