USC had no time to alter defensive alignment after firing coordinator Alex Grinch on Sunday. Still, the change cannot hurt. The Trojans were often hesitant and out of position under Grinch. Even if USC's D does not contribute to an Under, Oregon's can take the mantle. The Ducks have limited three Pac-12 foes to six points, mainly from stinginess in the red zone. Totals do not get much larger than this. With these offensive heavyweights, take a deep breath and rely on the rarity of 80-point college games.
The Trojans lost their shootout with Washington last week because their woeful defense couldn't manage to get a stop that might have put them in position to win. USC quarterback Caleb Williams received criticism in some corners for his reaction to the loss. But if he cares as much a his emotion suggests, and his teammates share the drive to win, the Trojans have value being spotted three scores against teh high-powered Ducks.
The Ducks still have a lot to play for. Ranked No. 6 by the College Football Playoff committee, Oregon knows that style points could be crucial come December. The Ducks, who rank second in the country in scoring (45.5 points a game), have a juicy matchup against a nonexistent USC defense that ranks 121st in the country (34.5). The Trojans have lost three of their last four, and all of their goals this season have been lost. Give me two units on the Ducks.
High scoring affair here. USC is 9-1 to the over with seven straight. The Trojans have lost three of their last four games and really have nothing to play for other than playing out the season and/or being a spoiler. Oregon has scored 33 or more points in every game this year! The Ducks will roll once again this week as a big favorite. My model has this one Oregon 49-35.
Dating back to last season, USC games have gone over the point total in 17 of their last 18, with the only under being a game in which the Trojans led Stanford at halftime, 49-3! Oregon is #1 in total offense (539.8) and #1 in points per game (47.4), while USC is #2 nationally in PPG (45.5). I don't care if the Trojans fired their defensive coordinator, they still won't be able to slow down the Ducks. Oregon 48, USC 35.
