Understanding Public and Money

Think of 'Public' as the percentage of people betting on each side and 'Money' as how much money is being bet. When there's a big difference between the 'Public' and 'Money' data, it usually means that the more serious bettors (referred to as 'Sharp Money') are favoring a particular side.

Matt's Analysis:

I love the run line here for the Yankees (-1.5, +126), as Gerrit Cole will completely dominate a mediocre Giants lineup. There's very little familiarity between the two sides, which means a big advantage for Cole. It's also cold in the Bronx, so there won't be much carry at all on fly balls and the longball was one of the few ways teams got to Cole last season. It might have to happen late, but the Yankees will be able to scratch a few runs across the board against Logan Webb and the Giants' bullpen, and that's all they'll need.

Matt's Analysis:

Look, I'm not going to be Gerrit Cole's lackey all season and simply back his games because it sometimes blows up spectacularly. That said, I do like him under -170 at home for Thursday's opener against a very punchless Giants lineup -- punchless because the team couldn't lure Aaron Judge in free agency and then the whole Carlos Correa mess and now Mitch Haniger is hurt. Cole was better at home last season and looked very good this spring with a 3.32 ERA, 27 strikeouts and just one walk in 21²/₃ innings.
