Kiffin facing his former team will get the headlines, but the game itself will feature two of the SEC's best teams entering conference play. LSU dominated Clemson, 51-10, in Week 1 and handled Louisiana Tech, 45-14, currently ranking second in the SEC in total offense with 586.0 yards per game and seventh in scoring offense with 48 points per game, having ranked last and 14th in the conference in both categories, respectively, last season.
Ole Miss survived a 41-38 shootout against Louisville in Week 1 and dominated Charlotte, 41-9, in Week 2. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has lived up to preseason Heisman hype, throwing for 561 yards, five touchdowns and one interception on 44 of 62 passing, as well as recording 62 yards and one touchdown on 12 rushing attempts in two games. Rebels head coach Pete Golding, who had previously worked as Kiffin's defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach before being promoted as his replacement, is 4-1 since taking over as head coach and will get the opportunity to best his former boss on Saturday.
SMU enters Saturday's game with a higher ranking, an undefeated record and four wins in its all-time matchup with Louisville, which includes a 38-6 win in 2025. Mustangs quarterback Kevin Jennings is off to an outstanding start to his senior season and threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns on 29 of 37 passing, while also recording a rushing touchdown, in his last game against the Cardinals.
Louisville's offense has also been impressive through its first two games, scoring a total 100 points in the near-upset of Ole Miss in Week 1 and the rout of Villanova in Week 2. Cardinals quarterback Lincoln Kienholz has been a true dual-threat, throwing for 639 yards and four touchdowns while also leading the team with 111 yards and three touchdowns on 20 rushing attempts.
Notre Dame has a 47-29-1 record against Michigan State all-time, which includes a victory in their last meeting in 2017. The Fighting Irish have won 12 consecutive games since Week 2 of the 2025 season. Quarterback CJ Carr has met lofty preseason expectations, throwing for 492 yards and six touchdowns on 35 of 49 passing through his first two games.
Michigan State hasn't had a winning season since 2021 -- even considering since-vacated wins between 2022 and 2024 -- but is off to a strong start in head coach Pat Fitzgerald's first season, with a Week 1 win against Toledo and a Week 2 blowout against Eastern Michigan. Running back Cam Edwards, who transferred from UConn for his senior year, has carried the load, recording a team-best 250 yards and three touchdowns on 48 rushing attempts through his first two games.
